    Valve adjustment shims

The shims are a small diameter and you would have to really try to take off material unevenly. Also, if the shim is rotated every few strokes across the sandpaper the material comes offl evenly--enough so that I can't measure the difference with my highly accurate micrometer. I've been do this...

    Valve adjustment shims

I have almost 100k on my 05. Each valve adjustment/check I can’t read the numbers on the shims because they have worn off. I have sanded the old shims to regain valve clearance for each valve adjustment. A reasonably accurate micrometer is required and the measured valve clearance has to be too...

    riding at high RPM's (6000-8000)

For all that knock riding at high RPM you should know in addition to accelerated engine wear it has a practical side. I use the rev limiter as a speed control to keep from getting a speeding ticket. If the speed limit is around 50, I just leave the transmission in 1st gear—simple. As my speed...

Powerlet Jacket Liner, Gloves and Dual Controller

Selling my Powerlet ProForm electric Jacket liner and dual controller. This is not a new item but is in excellent condition. I would still be using it but my wife bought Powerlet's newer liner (RapidFIRe liner) for me at Christmas. The ProForm liner uses internal wires for heating. The liner is...

2005 diag codes? What number is what?

I can get into diagnostic mode on my 05. The number to the right of d1:01 will change when I push either the select or reset buttons. There is also a smaller number (font size) at the lower right of the screen. Which set of numbers are the diagnostic trouble code? What is the difference between...

Will I need a Power Commander?

I have a stock 05 with a PCIII. The PC made a real difference. I originally uploaded the Wally Smoothness map and my MPG dropped about 4 mpg. I modified the mid range RPM/Part Throttle cells and got the MPG back up to stock (about 43 to 46 mpg on the hwy). My fuel map has the best of both fuel...

    Intake Air Pressure Sensor

Yes, This is called a MAP (manifold absolute sensor) if it's on a car. Yamaha calles it an air pressure sensor but is the same thing and works the same. It senses intake manidold pressure. There are 3 wires connected to the sensor. 1. Power = 5 volts from the ECU 2. Ground = ground from th...

    Difficult removal of oil filter

10 oil changes in 33k? Let's see, that's $5 per filter x 10 = $50 + 40 quarts (4qts x 10 oil changes) at $6 per qt. = $240 + the $50 for the filters for a grand total of $290. Buying into the “Lube-n-Tune” advertising campaign of changing oil every 3000 miles is a complete waste of your time and...

Motorcycle Consumer News 2013 FJR Review

I used to work at MCN and they do weigh the bikes with a full tank of fuel. Check out the review on the Richa jacket/pants in the same issue as the FJR review. The jacket is new technology and works great.

    Valve Adjustment

Don't bother with buying shims at the Yam dealer. Just sand the ones you have (you have to have a micrometer to measure how much you are taking off). I use 240 grit wet/dry paper with some light oil on it. After you get the shim where it needs to be use some 400 grit to polish the shim. I've...

Seeking Help with an Electronics Diagnostic Routine

    Race Tech suspension

I used the race-tech compression/rebound valving and springs on my 05 and it made a huge difference in handling. The installation is not hard if you already rebuild (or have rebuilt) any typical cartridge fork. It took me a Saturday to do bushings, seals, race-tech valving and spring. Well worth...

    Regulator voltage sensor

The battery's internal resistance increases as it becomes charged. With more internal resistance the amount of current (amps) that is delivered to the battery goes down. That's why it doesn't overcharge. However, I you connect a high-amperage, automotive type charger and pump 40 amps into a...

    Baker Built Air Wings

I did the same as above only I used old license plates that I cut to shape. Now when my bike falls over I can bend the "wings" back into shape and ride--a real benifit on a long trip. The license plats are reflective as well and they were free.
