Checking the valves is easy, and safe to do. Nothing complicated that has to be 'carefully' removed/replaced. If you have to replace a shim, it becomes a bit scarier, but not too bad, since you have to unbolt stuff and tie-wrap stuff.

My only caveat about the screws is: If your screen encounters something in a tip over (especially in the garage when you don't have the side stand fully extended), a metal screw will break the windshield; plastic screws will shear and leave your windshield unbroken. DAMHIK.

I would pull the connector from the r/r and clean it. Then put dielectric grease on it. Sometimes it is just a bad connection at the r/r.
