Why do you think my FJR's transmission failed?

I'm good with that. Though I'm thinking you'd have to reef on the shift lever pretty hard to bend a shift fork. One person I was talking to on my trip after my bike was replaced (a motorcycle mechanic of considerable reknown) told me that a shift that isn't quite completed all the way may slip...

Why do you think my FJR's transmission failed?

I have a hard time believing that shifting a bike down from a higher gear with the engine running will lead to the destruction of a transmission. Obviously, you don't want to do that just by jumping on the shift lever, but letting the clutch out and releasing a bit and -- with some gentleness--...

Why do you think my FJR's transmission failed?

Just for the record, I never shift without using the clutch. Basically, though, I follow that same procedure... except I use the clutch lever. The Mobil1 I used has a grey cap. Service SN, SM, SL. No "energy conserving" labeling which is the oil that resulted in wet clutch slipping when the...

Why do you think my FJR's transmission failed?

Thanks for the replies so far. None of the user-error problems sound like things I did. I may ask at the dealer who took it in what they found, but he's not exactly close to home.

Why do you think my FJR's transmission failed?

My old FJR ('06 Gen II with a bit under 80k miles) lost 4th gear while on a trip, so I traded it on the fly for a 2014 ES model and completed my trip. What made my '06 FJR's transmission fail? Or is the transmission a known weak point of the FJR's design? Oil changes were at 5k mile intervals...

New FJR, a couple of questions

Wow. Awesome for you to post the photo for me, mcatrophy. Thanks.

New FJR, a couple of questions

Thanks. Getting out the facts about how helpful some dealers can be is important to me.

New FJR, a couple of questions

Oh, thanks. I read the common historical data thread, but not that one; didn't even notice it, possibly because I don't consider myself a new owner.

New FJR, a couple of questions

Thanks all for the replies. I will indeed check the caliper bolts and hard bag screws. Please refresh my mind where the bag screws are... IIRC, they are the ones that hold the locks onto the case? Yeah, I guess the tech hurried and made a mistake, but in his defense, on the phone at noon I said...

New FJR, a couple of questions

My old FJR ('06 Gen II with a bit under 80k miles) lost 4th gear while on a trip, so I traded it on the fly for a 2014 ES model and completed my trip. With the new bike I received some clear plastic pieces that look like they're supposed to self-stick somewhere. Anyone know what they are for...

49 state '06 tank drain doesn't; allows water into gas.

Thanks everyone for your helpful and quick replies. Basically, I think I did what has been suggested, but I'm going to read through thoroughly to see if I missed anything. The filler neck is surprisingly simple. The only surprise is that only 3 of the 6 hold down screws actually hold anything...

49 state '06 tank drain doesn't; allows water into gas.

The drain to remove water from inside the fuel filler does not drain. Instead, after rain ride or washing, when I open the filler cap, accumulated water runs into the fuel. I did a quick search here and I have the factory manual, which I will look at; but posting here might turn up issue(s)...

    Need assistance with suspension settings

Advice? Yes: Replace the worn-out tires and make sure both tires are fully aired. Except for a basic setting of the suspension springs and valves as described by FredW, leave the suspension alone for now. If you ride with a passenger, make sure the passenger keeps her weight forward. No leaning...

Lessons Learned on changing the CCT

I just finished changing the CCT on my bike and the engine does sound quieter even if I never thought it noisy except for one brief incidence. I didn't do the slotted bolt trick, but I think that's a good idea for those who prefer it. No two cats are skinned alike. I considered enlarging the...

I paid my now former dealer...

It is very obvious whether a bolt has actually been removed and replaced since leaving the factory. I'm not going to write letters to the factory. I have better things to do with my time than navigating someone's run-around. My reason for posting is to flag a warning. Someone posted how to mark...

I paid my now former dealer...

Quite a while ago I paid my dealer to do the following: Fork oil change, new spark plugs, valve check/adjust. Yesterday, I removed the tank and heat shield to change the spark plugs and replace the CCT (Cam Chain Tensioner). What I found is that not a single fastener-- for the plumbing atop the...

    Cam Chain Tensioner revised again?

Ha, ha. Ran out of blue paint. defective blue paint. ha, ha. There is a true solution to the problem of CCTs, but you guys will howl like internet animals when I tell you. The answer is push rods and hydraulic adjusters. Yamaha is supposedly releasing a new motorcycle that will "change...

    Cam Chain Tensioner revised again?

Three problems, among others, arise with CCTs. First, heat expansion of both the chain v.s. the block/cylinders/head stack. Second, wearing of the chain that we see as "stretch." Actually, it is cumulative wear at each link. Third, wear at the slipper. Today's pistons, rings, cranks, rods...

    Cam Chain Tensioner revised again?

Oh, one more thing: A shout out of thanks to members of COG, one of whom used to be an FJR owner/rider and active here on this very topic. I ran into this group at a motel while on a cross-continent ride a few weeks ago and this guy pointed me toward the CCT when my bike made some noise on a hot...
