What to add to a bone stock FJR

After I rode my FJR for a while, I added a few things in the first month that have served me well ever since: Tank slapper protective film Magnum Blaster horns - the stock horns are worthless, and a decent horn is important, in spite of what Old Michael says Bar risers - both up and back...

    Garauld Refreshment System

Many outdoor stores have the CamelBak Thermal Control Kit - REI, Camping World, some larger Big 5's. You can also get it from Amazon. The cover on the mouthpiece helps keep it clean, and you get used to opening it one-handed…

I've decided on a GPS system

I have a Zumo 550, with XM Radio and Traffic, and it has worked well for me for over 60,000 miles. As Fred W. mentioned earlier, in my experience voice prompting is a safety feature. If you're navigating in heavy traffic -- say rush-hour in the Bay Area in Northern California, or Seattle, or...

    Garauld Refreshment System

I think I prefer the original orientation -- this one seems like it might be more likely to catch your pants on the latch as the rider mounts and dismounts from the bike. But if the owner has the choice, it's all good -- pick the setup that works best for your situation.

    Garauld Refreshment System

The problem I see with this setup is it makes it hard to remove the jug at stops. A lot of the time when I stop at a gas station with a mini-mart, I take the jug in and fill up with ice from the soda dispenser, and buy a gallon bottle of water, which is usually cheaper than a 1 liter bottle...

    Datel on a 2010

The meter and the bezel are available at Bike Meters. I have the DMS-20PC-1-DCM in red with 1/10th volt readout, mounted without the bezel in panel D on my '05.

Rally riding today - first time on reserve

I did a big BMR ride a couple of days ago, and it really is a fun rally. I rode up from the L.A. area to the Central Coast, and collected the 15 post offices bonuses available in the area. On the way back home I stopped in Ventura for the Channel Islands N.P. bonus. The weather was about...

Rally riding today - first time on reserve

Reserve fuel on Gen II's is 1.45 gallons (per the Bin-O-Facts), so 50 miles is doable if you baby it -- but I get really antsy at 35 miles. I've taken my Gen I to 42 miles once, and it wouldn't run on the sidestand when I got to the gas station.

What did you do to your FJR today?

Yesterday, I took the FJR on a 680-mile ride to Califonia's Central Coast to collect 16 bonus locations for the Big Money Rally. Good times...

My son got a Speed Triple in black in early November, and he loves it. Just this morning he had to get a new rear tire, at 4750 miles...

One of these things........is not like the other.

I'll 'fess up to being the owner of the bike that Hal is working on. In my defense, though, and as a cautionary tale, I'll say that from zero to 55,000 miles I had all my service done (except for oil changes, which I did myself) at my local Yamaha dealer. They told me they were performing all...

    SPOT locator

Garauld has a reservoir-mounting bracket that works great as a SPOT mount, as well as a radar detector mount. (I actually stack mine - V1 on the bottom, SPOT I on the top - the strap holds them both on securely.) Garauld's reservoir-mounted radar detector bracket It doesn't solve the get-off...

    WTB: Gen I Rear Seat

I shipped the rear seat from my '05 to Bill Mayer Saddles in Ojai for a recover, and FedEx delivered it to the wrong place. They were not able to track down the package. I filed a claim with FedEx and based on what I've been told so far, I expect a fair settlement within the week. In the...

    The Unthinkable

Angeles Crest is a great motorcycling road, but be aware that it is posted at 45mph and is heavily patrolled, especially between the 210 and Red Box.

    Garmin Zumo 550 Audio Setup

I needed something to mix my Zumo and my radar detector audio, and used the details in this old post from the Forum to build my own: AB headphone switch - make sure you wind up at post #7, by jekirby It's unpowered, and only provides an electrically safe way to combine two audio inputs into one...
