I'm always skeptical of atricles that claim "research actually shows....." and then they fail to mention who did the research and often fail to cite any record of it at all. Since most so called "safety research" is performed for financial or political gain, I prefer to keep my own council...

FYI the surging issue is limited to the Gen II FJR's (06 and 07 models so far). No reason to expect surging on an '03..... :D

As long as you keep the oil changed on a semi-regular basis and the bike is not overheating, you should be able to run whatever RPM you want (short of redline) for extended periods of time. Certainly 4500-5500 RPM is no worry.
