I choose to back out the entire pumpkin and shaft about once a year, and clean, inspect, regrease the shaft, and the U-joint. Takes me < 1 hour.

Are you sure you haven't been robbed? How the hell would that long bolt work its way out without you noticing until now? :confused:

A few years ago, I carefully measured, then formed a one of a kind solid platform out of aluminum plate (0.125" thick) which spans both my front hydraulic master cylinders (clutch and brake). Replaced metric screws holding down the covers of those hydraulic reservoirs with slightly longer ones...
