If there is a thread for this I apologize. I searched for one to no avail.

This has happened to me three times.

If the bike does not start on the first try and then try again, the trip meters and the clock will reset themselves to 0 and 1:00 respectively. Fortunatly the odometer stays the same.

I know this is a minor thing but it is irritating changing the clock and difficult to keep up with mpg because of this.

I bought the bike in Nov. and this is the first problem I have encountered.

Any help would be appreciated.

I ain't no electrical expert, but in idiots terminology...............

You got yurself some kind of electrical connection problem. The display is resetting because of a low voltage condition same as it would if you disconnected the battery. Running the starter is a high draw operation, and due to a bad connection somewhere, its dropping the voltage.

I would check your connections at the battery for tightness and corrosion. Then check the ground to the frame for same. After that it gets ugly. Check fuses, wires to the starter, ect., ect., ect...............

Also make sure you wait three or four seconds before you press the starter button a second or third time. If you try to restart while the starter motor is still spinning and coming to a stop you can experience a momentary larger-than-normal starter motor current. This larger current will cause the battery voltage to sag more possibly causing a clock and tripmeters reset.

Someone needs to design a simple circuit with a capacitor or small AAA type 12 volt battery to solve this occasional problem.

I've had this happen a few times, most recently yesterday, when I don't let things settle down between attempts.

Sounds like you're already past the conceptualization part. Roll on!

+1 on the new batt. My 03 used to do it all the time and after the new batt. is hasn't does it once. I don't have any idea why because the old batt tested just fine. I am sure somebody will pontificate on batterys but just put a new in and keep riding. :)

:D Thanks for all of the good info. Looks like I will go battery shopping!

Ride Safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
