I ride an FJR 03 and enjoy the power and speed. Which gear is best used to lift the front wheel. I'm lifting it a little but just curious which gear is the best for the most success.

Thanks

Geeee whiz, I wouldn't do that. Prolly not a good thing for Yamaha to know if they must replace your fork seals. I have "accidently" lofted mine in 1st, and while passing a car in a rather spirited manner (short mountain straightaway) I think the same thing occured in 2nd gear. I've read stories about the front being "very" light in 3rd under hard acceleration...but that was on the internet, so no way to check facts. :dribble:

 I've been told that if you ride the '03 at 5000 rpm in first gear for two seconds and then punch it - the front will come up rapidly as high as you want

So I've been told ;)

I wonder if the 06's have that same defect?

Actually, my experience is that you really have to want the '06 to wheelie. It does not do it just by "whacking" the throttle.

Without getting too deep into the "don't do stupid crap on public roads" thread, the '03 will wheelie just fine if you want it to. In at least the first three gears. It's about techniqe, not necessarily power.

Some people I know, (and yes, I really mean other people), who shall remain un-named, have noted that if you are in the 5k rpms area and lift throttle, let the forks dive, then whack it, the nose will mysteriously rise from the pavement.

A couple of salient points. This is a 650 pound Sport touring bike, not a 400 pound sport bike. If you want to learn to wheelie, please go buy a dirt bike, some protective gear, and have a blast learning to do it.

My buddy thought he was good at doing wheelies on his yz426f until he got one out of control and crushed the top of his foot  Still not walking straight these days :( . Moral of the story, "You Play.....You Pay.....eventually!" And yes he was wearing the appropriate gear! Worst part was that his 9 year old son watched him do it ;)

Cheerio,

Bryce

I love the bit about "You play, you pay". Example: One way to find out how expensive 4WD parts are is to go into the boondocks and play "Rat Patrol". Lessee, boy, I knead wunna them steerin knucles en a tye rod en wunna my frens sez we orta replace the spindle, tew. Zackly how much is thet gunna bee?

Hrms... My 06 seems to be lacking this 5k whack the throttle open feature. Maybe it's the bit longer swing arm, or my fat ass.

Not saying it can't wheelie, cause there are ways without being too abusive (I've been told, buy a guy who knows a guy, who has one). But that is not this bikes forte.

and OCfjr is right, This is not the bike to 'learn on, you already need to know what ur doin'

I'll keep that stuff for in the dirt.

 I have been told that on the '06 the 5000 rpm theory doesn't work w/o some weight shifting help. This must be due to the gearing, swingarm, weight changes.

BTW, Renegade is right....this stuff is best kept in the dirt! Might I suggest a CRF450X? Actually, my old KTM525 was killer at this....

Took delivery of my 06 in May, as I rode it around the dealers lot working on getting a "feel for it" I kinda messed up the turn at the far end of the lot, more or less wacked the throttle at the end. When I got back to the front of the store, shop foreman said "you got air".

Well yaauuhhh! Tell him who you are -- airboss.
Longer wheel base & gear change work against the '06. I found that as my '04 broke in over several thousand miles it gradually became more and more defective.
