033 Code - Engine Misfire, Down to 3 cylinders

2014 FJR with 80,400 miles.  On trip to Yellowstone National Park a couple of weeks ago, engine stumbled, check engine light came on.  I pulled into a pull off as soon as possible and shut off the engine.

Restarted with misfire that cleared up with revs about 4K.  Limped it out of the part with multiple incidents of loss of power and CEL.

033 code for coil 1 circuit on dash.  (Note that I replaced all four coils at approx 40,000 miles when 2 coils failed)

I've since replace coil 1 with one of the spares from last coil issue and cleared up for about 30 miles, when CEL came back on and same code.

I then swapped coil and plug from 1 to 2 and started without CEL, but haven't taken it out for a ride yet.  I'm currently waiting on new spark plugs and coils (coils are on backorder everywhere).  While waiting I've done the valve clearance check with everything well within spec.

Anybody with similar issues?  Any advice on other things to check?

I ended up replacing all four coils with new OEM parts. Runs flawlessly again.

by the way, I checked the resistance on all four coils (primary and secondary coils), they were all within spec, not sure why the intermittent problems

Another update: At 94,959 miles, with brand new OEM coils (83,000 miles replaced) I'm once again getting the coil code. I've swapped the supposedly bad coil from cylinder 2 to 3 and runs fine.

I'm really stumped on this recurring intermittent coil code (with the coils testing good).

At 101,000 miles - coil code is back

I swapped #4 and #3 coils expecting the code to switch from 033 to 032 as it would with bad coil. It didn't, ran well for awhile then set 033 code again.

I swapped coils randomly between all 4 cylinders and mixed in a couple older coils, still showing 033 (cylinder 4).

Next I'm going after wiring to coil 4.

Something else is going on. While there have been some reported coil failures, nothing like what you are experiencing.
Note: Coil diagnosis by resistance measurement is only helpful if completely open or a dead short. Might "test" OK at low voltage and normal ambient temperatures but break down at high temperatures and high voltage.

Correction: 033 is for coil #1, for some reason the service manual had 033 trouble code for #1, but diagnostic side has 033 for coil 4.

I checked all 4 coils I have on the shelf and 4 on the bike. All primary and secondary resistances are within spec, but I understand that this is not definitive that the coil is good.

I swapped back in the 4 newest coils and labeled them to track if I need to move around again. I have 2 new OEM coils on order, but not available until the end of June

Visually checked the wiring, looks fine - not loose connections, frayed insulation, etc.

Per the wiring diagram, all the coils share a common power - I checked and do have power at all 4 connectors with key on.

Once again (for now at least) the engine is running fine with no codes. I'll test it a few more times in the garage and then button things back up to do a test ride.

Original coils had issues at about 40,000 miles. Replaced with new OEM - issues again at about 80,000 miles. Third set of new OEM coils and issues around 100,000 miles.

Service manual troubleshooting guide says swap coils and run for 5 seconds - if no code: fixed. Then replace coil and run for 5 seconds. If still issue, it goes right to ECU replacement.
