Hello Everyone,

I am buying a FJR tomorrow. This is going to be my first FJR. I have not even test ride it yet . What are the things that I have to be aware of

The guy who is selling the FJR is asking for $7000 for it . It has 22000 miles on it and custom seats, muflers, top box ,heated handles..is it a fare price for 04 FJR?

I would appriciate any feed back..

Thanks

ABS? Or not? What kind of custom seat?

Sounds fair to me, but more detailed info is needed for a more accurate SkooterG appraisal.

let her warm up..If its an 03-05 listen for a tick..(knock) there is a number of gen1 that has this ailment which in most cases are fixed with battle with local dealers to diagnose it with "pre mature valve guide ware " with no cost to the owner. here is a web sight to give you all the detailes you need

https://www.bestbits.org/ticking_overview.html

Good luck..besides this it is a great bike

NYCRider, first, since the bike is not brand new, I would diffently want to look at the bike in person and then test ride it before purchase unless you're feel real lucky. Then you want to look at records or any paperwork kept, pink slip, registration, bill of sale, any warrantee work done, any work done period, service records, parts purchased etc.

Next, take a look at the oil. Dip your finger in it to see if its clean, and smell your finger, (no wise cracks from the balcony please), for any signs of burnt oil and then rub your fingers for any signs of metal particles in the oil.

Take a pin light or small flashlight and look under the bike, in the bike, anywhere you can see to check for loose or broken wires, cables, signs of leaking oil, fluids, gaskets, bent or worn suspension parts or bushings, leaking shocks, etc. You should be able to tell alot about the bike if its clean and kept in good working order just by looking at it.

Listen for any abnormal sounds when starting the bike and when its running, like the tic mentioned. Check all the controls, levers, switches, etc, to make sure all the lights, turn signals, brake lights, ease of throttle, etc. are working.

Look at the brake rotors to make sure their smooth and not grooved or worn. And of course look at the tires and how they've worn to make sure even wear has occured. You might see some flat wearing on the center of the rear tire which is normal.

You can do a background check on the VIN number ahead of time to make sure its all legal like and other than that, maybe someone else has some ideas. From your description above already sounds like a nice bike. Good luck and let us know how you did. PM. <>< ;)

Just my opinion but the engine heat on the Gen I models is unbearable, I would look for an 06 personally. I owned an 04 and couldn't stand it, however I was living in Florida at the time. I didn't keep it long.

I wouldn't be able to stand the heat riding ANYTHING in Florida. But that's not the bike, that's just me.

And I have no problem with my '05 with zero heat mitigation done (so far)

Well I pulled the tricker and got it. Tomorrow I will register the bike . First test ride was good. I can't wait to get my tags and get on the highway. If I really like it I may get a brand new one before the season is over, if the newer bike has lot more to offer.

That brings the other question, is there a big difference between 04 and 08?

Welcome to the hoard.

Big differences ? That depends on your definition of "Big".

Someone will be along to chastise you into reading the Bin of Facts and using search.

Your '04 is a 1st gen. '06's on are 2nd gen. There are some differences (you can find them detailed all over the forum), but I poersonally am quite happy with my 1st Gen '05 and see no need to upgrade to a newer one.

You got a great deal provided the engine is solid and there is no damage history.

Even if it were a ticker I think they are still fixing them for free - so you did very well.

All of the performance of brand new at about 1/2 of the price and ABS :specool:

(I have the same bike so I am extra objective.)

The heat is minor... If your coming from a Connie or a big V-Twin, The heat from the FJR is NOTHING.

The price sounds great to me, Considering everything thats included with it.

As far as the ticking, Some Gen 1's have this issue, But it's not a life threatening issue. There are people who have run their FJR's over 100k and they are tickers, And they ran fine. The sure fire way to tell if you have "Pre-mature Valveguide wear", Is to remove the exhaust pipe and look for traces of oil.

Good luck and welcome to the fold! :)

Welcome to the forum.

The 2004 FJR1300 is, by far, the best AND fastest of all the years. It's something about the silver that bonds with the organic blend of cosmic alpha particles... well. anyway, it's a chemical thing. :yahoo: :yahoo:

Don't let the "blue" bastages talk you into ANYTHING! :assassin:

+1 What Fred said……

I bought my 04 new; never bothered by the heat (but I live in the NW), and only desire to upgrade is for the color on the 08……(I think I might be able to get a paint job for less than the difference in price of an 08 and value of mine)

Enjoy and keep the rubber side DOWN…

Yeah, it's a chemical thing alright. The chemicals they put in the '04 owners' kool-aide to help combat the denial.

Everyone knows the blue 1st gens are the fastest. ;)

I don't know about the 08, but I love my '04 and will ride it as long as it will last...it will be a sad day when that happens. I love my '04...best bike ever. :clapping: :yahoo:
