Seems that the dreaded "ticking" is going to be inevitable....if and when I get it....I'll be shopping for a new concourse.
Maybe you should take a proactive approach and sell it while it's still worth something. :D

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...........

Over the past 500 miles my '05 (at 11750k miles) has developed an odd noise at idle when hot that seems to go away at higher RPM's. I was assuming that it was the begining of an exhaust leak at the header (maybe a bad gasket). Was going to check it out when I do my 12k oil change. Should I waste time and remove the header myself while checking this out and look for oil or should I wait and see if the noise gets more prominent as time passes?

You are aware of this thread?

Ticking Sound Byte, Finally you can hear it for yourself!

Wait. Unfortunately, there are enough instances of true "tickers" to justify the paranoia that spreads to every other FJR owner who now listens for any little sound coming from their precious FJR. Mine makes plenty of noise too, but with 68,000 on the clock, is NOT a ticker.

I am pretty sure that when you have the "tick", it is most prominent around 3000 rpm. So if your tick goes away at upper RPM, I don't think you have anything to worry about. If you do have a ticker, it will make itself obvious in time. Until then, try not to worry about it. I mean, you don't wake up every day and start fretting over the possiblity that you may have cancer do you?

Thanks for the sound recording link. It was a reassuring. Kinda makes me want to put as many miles on the bike as fast as possible to eliminate all uncertainty.

The tick will be most pronounced between 3200-3500 up to about 4000 then it goes away, at least for an early stage ticker.

Worldbound - That's exactly how mine developed. First noticed it when hot, but not there after a full cool down. Sounds exactly like a chevy small block with a bad lifter or exhaust leak at idle with a real clatter developing as you rev the engine through 3500 in neutral.

I ride with ear plugs so I didn't notice it until one day when I fired the bike up without my helmet on to move it across the parking lot. Then it was WTF is that sound? Got progressively worse over the next 4k miles until I took it in for repair. Pretty soon you will be able to hear it when you roll off the throttle and the engine revs drop through the 3k-4k band.

I wouldn't bother taking the header off, just ride it until the sound gets worse to the point that you can't stand it and it's obvious enough that the dealer can't tell you that you are imagining it and have been reading too much on the internet.

Good luck, it's dissapointing to spend 12k on a bike and have **** like this happen, but it's not the end of the world.

Ronman - Are you coming to WFO in Reno? There will be expert "ticker testers" taking sound samples to sort the Timex's from the Rolex's . . . :)
Have no plans, Ric, for attending. I'm only about 3-1/2 to 4 hours away, so maybe I'll make it up for the day during the weekend to have a listen and share a brown ale with you guys.

I ran some injector cleaner through mine the other day and it quieted down quite a bit. I didn't really think it sounded like "the tick"

Lee

Well FWIW my 05 has 12,000+ miles and shows no sign of ticking. Just normal valve train noise that's been there from the begining. :good: But then that's not surprising since I use Amsoil  :p

The tick does not discriminate agaonst any oil. No oil will exempt the ticker from, well, ticking. Nor will breakin method or maintanence. If you have one you have one. Nothing you can do about it. There are no common factors to tie in why one ticks and the others don't.

Really??? Shocking!

Only one other thing it could be then. It's because I never ride wearing plad pants and platform shoes. If I did I'd surely have a ticker and women would find me far too irresistable, me being happily married and all. It's bad enough with a cape and a spandex shirt (especially when it's cold)... You guys with tickers might want to rethink your fashion choices...

Go ahead, just try and tell me tickers don't discriminate against pants...

Evil - I am not giving up my plaid pants. I have to draw the line somewhere. Come to think of it, I couldn't reach the ground without my platform shoes either . . .

By the way, who said I wasn't using Amzoil? :)

I am happy to announce - I got my FJR out of the shop today!!!! :clapping: The first thing I noticed was . . . . quiet. The second thing I noticed was . . . more power.

The delay was not the fault of the dealer. Apparently in the Sacramento area there is only one machine shop that is highly regarded. Because they are so highly regarded they have a serious backlog of work to do. So, I will not be riding a Triumph to WFO after all.

it took from May 17th until July 10th to get your bike repaired - WTF??!!!

Man, that is plain disgusting..

On the other hand, glad you have it back and it sounds better.

Mine was repaired at 18.5k miles and is just shy of 30k miles and it is still quiet and strong. It runs so much stronger now than it did at the original 12k miles and sounds very crisp..
