So was wondering what kind of miles are being put on 06's and if anyone had experienced/heard ticking??

I've got 10K on mine now, nice and quite. After I run the Butt-Lite and head off to Denver for the IBA Nat. meet I should have nearly another 10K on her. We should know by then :D

Dammit dammit dammit! At 8100 now; haven't been on the bike in 3 weeks after sending my seat into Billmayersaddles.com for a custom jobbie, so now I'm behind!! :angry2: :D Ahh well, just got my seat in, headed out Friday for a 2 1/2 week excursion to the Canadian Rockies; hopefully I'll have a chance to catch up then. :yahoo: But no, no ticking...

My 06 sounds different than my non-ticking 04. Not exhaust or intake roar, but mechanically.

Makes me think there are internal changes. A positive sign in my mind. If I had to venture a guess, I'd say the ticking issue is a thing of the past for 06's. Time will tell.

06' Ticker???, Any 06 Ticker out there yet??
That's pretty gloomy with the "yet". You're assuming there will be '06 tickers. I hope Yamaha was able to fix them with updated valve seals and there aren't any.

Blue Streak,

I got an 06A with 2600 miles on it. When I start the bike up cold and let it warm to the 1000 RPM idle speed, I do hear a soft click, click, click. When I'm riding the bike, I don't hear it anymore, but I also wear a full face helmet so it could still be happening. I don't have the mechanical background that many possess on this site. So, I don't know if this is normal or not. When I bring the bike into the dealer to fix the 17MPG stuck issue, I'll mention the tick, tick at start up idle and report back to the Forum.

Does it only do it if you start it on the side stand vice center stand?

My '05 makes a few clicks/clunks if I start it cold (Side stand only)

If I start it cold on the center stand, you will see the rear wheel move for a bit (no noises)

Try it & see if it works for you

If that's all it is, this is normal.

I thought my 06 was becoming a ticker. It started making some valve noise at about 4K miles. Maybe I shouldn't be, but I was relieved to find that the 06 AE that Yamaha is carting around as a demo bike with only 600 miles on it makes exactly as much valve noise as my 4k mile A. I figure if Yamaha reps think the AE sounds normal, my A must sound normal.

I did get a chance to hear a bona fide 05 ticker at WFO-5. There's valve noise, then there's ticker valve noise. As Warchild explained, the 05 ticker has not even developed full-on ticker racket. My 06 is much, much quieter, though it makes more noise than my 17k mile 05 ever did.

I usually start it cold from the center stand. But, I appreciate your observation. I'll try starting it cold from the side stand to see if there is any difference due to the free spin of the rear wheel. I'm getting YES 4 year warranty coverage from D&H Cycle so I'm not worried about it. I just ride and have fun. It really is a great bike.

If that was mine you listened to, I cranked another 1500 miles on it after I got to CA. It ticks at all RPMs now, whether warm or cold. I'm in NE on more vacation (without the bike :angry2: ) but I get back the end of the week. Ticker fix begins Tuesday, the 29th... we'll see how that project goes. :glare: Thank god for ear plugs during my ride up the coast... I wouldn't have been able to handle that noise all the time.

Hey Rick, Thanks for the feedback. Let us know how she sounds after your trip. Thanks, Rob
Just shy of 20K now still nice and quite. Iggy's right "ticker yet" might be a bit of bad karma B)

I'll second what Rick said. I've got just over 20K and no unusual noises heard.

The paint on the saddle bags is a little messed up but that's another story. Thanks to Skyway for the sliders :clapping:

Just bought an 06 A. Sounds like left valve ticking. Noticed it about 200 miles and have about 1200 miles on the bike now. 1st trip to the dealer re: ticking. Dealer test ride revealed just what I described, dealer called Rep. Rep said "keep riding it, it's not even broken it yet". That's what I'm going to do. No loss of power noted, the thing is a torque monster! Light ticking at 2500 to 3k then again at about 4k. None heard above 4k (probably because above 4k in 5th = 85mph) If it continues, I will post the results of the next trip to the dealer.
