originally posted here last year asking for advice regarding feasibility of 135 lb. daughter handling an FJR.

got lots of good advice including lowering the bike. also pinned the saddlebags, installed Kisan headlite modulator, and added a CB so I can coach.

left MN saturday, made Red Lodge last nite via mostly 2 lane.

Rode the pass this AM. daughter did fine, a bit timid on some of the 20 mph switchbacks and I restrained my passing so she wouldn't feel like she had to keep up.

worst thing was some rain and hail we got while driving thru Yellowstone.

Have seen only ONE other FJR in over 1000 miles of riding. seems like the harleys outnumber all other bikes put together by 20 to 1.

Trip going well. you never really know how a kid is going to do until you let them try .......

Beartooth Pass is an awesome ride. Glad your daughter did well. The FJR is such a fine handling machine, you don't need to muscle it. I think I would be nervous if my daughter was riding anything on 2 wheels. Probably a mixture of a little bit of chauvinism and a little over protection on my part.

I think you may have hooked her. What a wonderful experience for a young woman to have with her father. I didn't start riding long distance till I was 30. Wish I would have started earlier. Let us know how she likes it after the trip is over.

+1 on being surrounded by Harleys. When I mention to someone that I ride and they say, "What kind of Harley do you have?", I have to grit my teeth. :headbonk:

Sounds like your daughter is doing quite admirably. I started my son out street riding at age 17 on a KLR650. Not too many months after that, I decided to upgrade to an FJR or similar bike. He quickly laid claim to my 955i Tiger and is enjoying the heck out of that beastie. :yahoo: Mama remains a bit worried, but he's showing good judgment and ability.

It's nice for us dads to get to do that stuff together with our young adult kids. Plus, their friends think we're very cool compared to most other dads our age. B)

Congratulations. sounds like a really neat experience with your daughter. I don't understand it either, I've done both now, the Harley and the FJR in the mountains. I only thought the Harley was fun, until I took my FJR... God this is one wonderful bike! Must be something about image over substance in their minds. whatever.

I totally agree with your last statement, but it is not always an easy thing to do. But I bet your kid is doing better than you imagined. They can be that way.

Hey now...... all Father/Daughter Road Trip threads must have accompanied photos....

Hey, it's mandatory.... it's the rules....

It's Sturgis time in that part of the world. There have been thousands of Harleys (on and off) trailers  going through Colorado and Wyoming these days.

Sounds like a most excellent adventure for you and your daughter. Ride safe and enjoy this beautiful part of the country.

What a great trip for you and your daughter! Happy to hear that she is doing so well on the Feej, but not surprised.

One item which caught my attention: When you first open the main screen for the forum, I noticed that your thread was listed, as it had been the most recently replied to under the first category, "FJR Specific Discussion" That's cool, except the teaser line reads: "17 year old daughter does bear..."!

While I will admit to LMAO, you might want to consider editing your thread title a bit, like shortening it to "17yo daughter does Beartooth Pass". I think that would display a little better. ;)

Ride ON and have fun!

Don

today we're doing whitewater rafting.
then about a day to Devils tower/Sturgis. will do a "walk thru" at Sturgis, I really don't want to hang around till nitefall with two teenage girls.

I will not show my 17yo son this post. Although I hope to ride with him someday, I will NOT buy him an FJR. :)
Come on Wheatie, buy your boy an FJR! After 2009 Iron Butt Rally I think SkooterG is going to sell The Dirty Old Whore for $199.95, plus tax; he'll have finally worn her out after that. Son will have to provide his own duct tape for any major repairs!

Oldryder: Thanks for the write up and the photos! HotRodZilla, SkooterG and I rode Bear Tooth Pass on Monday 8/3 Noon.

There was indeed a gaggle of Harleys on Lolo, Bear Tooth, and Chief Joseph; actually all the high passes had H-D's on them.
