For sure, that $8,600's not too, too far away from being able to buy my '10 creampuff that's listed in the classifieds............

 
Just for a comparison, I bought an 05 with 3800 miles on it 3 1/2 years ago for 6500 with a Cal Sci windshield and a Corbin seat. It ought to be even cheaper now.

 
It's worth $8,000 or so.

It's a LOT of bike for $8,000 and no engine wear.

First thing I'd do is change those rock hard 10 year old tires.

Your assuming facts not in evidence. I don't know what happens to an engine that sits for at least 9 years with the same oil(slightly polluted) in the bottom, un-circulated. And I'm not going to find out. Will it need to be drained and flushed? Will the oil pump die prematurely? If the tires are slightly hard and unusable would it not make sense that other rubber parts(seals, hoses, brake-lines and o-rings) are in about the same shape. And a gas tank filled, or half-way filled with the lovely crap unleaded we havta use today.....I'm sure that's virtually "wear-free" as well. I can agree that the engine MIGHT require the least effort to make road-worthy. But I don't think it's worth $8000.

Case in point; my recent purchase of an 04 with 41,000 on the clock. $4500. I highly doubt that engine will wearout in my lifetime. IF it does, I've got $3500 in the bank to go find a $2000 engine.

 
It seem people are reading problems into this bike with out much thought. It is just a electrical / mechanical machine that goes down the road. It is worth buying but not for 10,999.00 I give him about 7k. The serial number indicates it is a Cali bike

I'm with you weekend rider. I think it's kind of funny how people anthropomorphize a vehicle to the point that they think it will get flabby and out of shape by sitting around. I say: (For the most part) this is nonsense. When you own a motorcycle for 10 years, even if you manage to put 10-15k miles on it a year, it is still spending the vast majority of its life sitting in garage with "dirty" oil in it and the tank at varying states of fill. Yeah, the tires may be dry rotting due to their age (easy enough to check for, and certainly not a big financial burden to replace) but if I remember right the stock tires on these bikes from the factory were crappy Metzler Z6's anyway. All the other rubber bits and pieces will have aged some, but no worse that if the bike had been getting used regularly. IOW a bike with low mileage would not be a deterrent to me.

However, I would not pay too high of a premium for the bike because it is "one of the few." I would pay a little premium because it has more of its life left in it, but you still have to remember that the bike has depreciated in value every year for the past 10 years.

By the way, SnoCat's 2010 is an awesome deal. If I hadn't just shot my entire fun money wad on buying a Jeep this winter I would seriously be considering a 5 model year FJR upgrade. I even happen to like the color that year. It would match the other two silver bikes in the garage. ;)

Well.....I bought a 2008 from a dealer last February that had less than 3,000 miles on it and haven't had a single issue other than needing a new battery.

It pretty much sat for 5 years.

 
If i was in the market, my offer would be around $6500 as it sits.

As some have stated earlier, depreciation is the killer here. If you buy it and put perhaps four-five thousand miles on it, now you have a typical low mileage '05 that may sell for $6000.

(I recently bought my '05 for that amount with 4200 miles on it. Looks brand new. And it had a couple hundred worth of extras through in.)
