I recently had to replace some plastic and the headlight assy. Never mid why, but the bike was all good when I started stripping evey bit of plastic so I could put a new stay on, as the old was bent. A lovely $400 part! Same price as the used headlight assy I got from the States for $430 delivered vice a grans here at mates rates! Anyway, I digress...

So after a few repeats due to forgotten plugs and such the bike is back together. Engine starts but engine light is on. Code is 5h_ _ 41 just above the shift light. Test drive conducted. Shifting gears worked as far as they changed, but no power at all hardy, like always being three gears to low. Engine from idle to a flick of the throttle indicates nothing wrong with the engine.

It was fine after the incident that caused me to change panels. While I had all the parts off I did take apart and contact clean all the connectors, thinking that is a good thing. Everything works, until I try to ride. The nasty spiders I have read about looked ok, nothing indicating burns etc. Now I am not sure but I took off the left air breather cover where the YCCS motor is because I though that was where my air cleaner is. Nothing in there, something to do with being an AE model?

Any ideas? Heeellllppppp!!!!!

I'm sure someone sensible will be along shortly to give you some help.

In the meantime I would have a good look around air breather cover - make sure you haven't disturbed (or disconnected) the air intake pressure sensor..........

SH__41 indicates coolant temperature sensor too high or too low. Chances are you've got a bad contact/damaged cable between the sensor and the ECU or MCU.

If you look at this pic:

the green connector on the right hand side is on the coolant temperature sensor. Check its connection and wiring.

When I had it all apart I removed the sensor and did a check on it. The resistance was correct at the required temp. I did so as before i found the rad fans were never on when the bike was hot. I also checked the fans and fan relay. All was good. But I did notice the fans were running when i did my test ride. SO maybe I stuffed the sensor somehow. So that is a separate thing.

I found this on the intro forum: What's the loose wire under the dash area of my bike? It's a "thermistor" for the temperature sensor. Talked about here and many other places.

Well I remember that wire it had an eye connector on the end and I put some tape over it in case it might short on something as I had no idea what it was for. Could covering it up causse some of my problems? I will pull the panels back off to find it and remove the tape anyway.

That loose thermistor is nothing to do with your problem, all it does is drive the ambient temperature display, nothing to do with your engine temperature sensor. Covering it will merely slow its response slightly, it will do no harm at all.

Not necessarily the sensor. It could be in the wiring or more likely a connector.

Try using the diagnostic screen to 'view' the engine temperature sensor (on mine, 2009 it's diagnostic code d:06).

Popped the tank up and yep I had forgotten to hook uo the coolent sensor connector. Thanks for the tis. I also just looked around to make sure ll was OK. I found no issues, so I started the engine and no code issues. So I test rode it. All was as it should be! Go figure.

Now this has happened before. When running to high rpm and shifting at speed quickly, the YCCS decides to display a warning light, stops letting me shift and puts up code SH_ _ 46. I then have to pull over, turn the bike off to power it all down, then turn it on and restart . It starts in the gear it was stuck in, this time it was 3rd but I have had it happens in all gears but 1st. Just click down to 1st and ops normal. Anyone know what code 46 is for?

Most likely a slipping clutch. Actual quote is "Engine speed and gear position sensor signal do not match while vehicle is driven...". A few have reported this. Could be worn clutch or using non-motorcycle specific engine oil (most car oils have friction inhibitors, oily clutches still need friction ;) ). I'd suggest pulling the clutch apart (a relatively easy job), checking for wear, cleaning the friction plates with maybe brake cleaner, soaking them in oil and rebuilding. Change the oil at the same time to a motorcycle-specific one.

For what it's worth, I posted a clutch soak how-to here.

Since it only happens when hard on the throttle, I wil stop doing hard on the throttel until I can do as you suggest. Thanks!
