The Cognoscente Group, in conjunction with the LD Riders Admin Team, hosted our annual Gathering out at the Mecca of LD Riding, Gerlach, Nevada this past weekend, Sep 19-20. The afternoon's festivity out on the Playa this year was a *New Low*, even for us. Instead of the typical Drive-By shooting of the Barbie doll, we decided to take things to an even lower level!

"Motorcycle Jousting".... but instead of long wooden poles, we would be using paintball assault rifles!
laugh.gif

We set up wooden blocks to act as barriers that the bikes had to stay "outside" of (so the closest the bikes passed each other was ~ 25-ish feet) , and they could NOT fire upon one another until they passed the first wood block, and had to stop firing after passing the second wood block.

Motorcycles, alcohol and paintball assault rifles... what could go wrong?
blink.gif

And so it begins... here is a big line of Long Distance motorcycles appear to be heading out into the Playa of the Black Rock Desert, sometime early Saturday afternoon, Sept 20...

Check out the lead bike... a FJR! It's TURBO DAVE HICKS!

TurboDaveLeadsPlayaBikes.jpg

Someone foolishly took a chain-drive bike out onto the Playa....

So somebody gets to clean off a lot of talcum silt....

I am sure a whole lot of pics - and video - of this past weekend's debauchery will start showing up here soon. I bet Ignacio is completely unaware of the hi-def video cam running when he ran through the bonfire nude.

Lo', the power of the internet!

Standby... this oughta be good....

Just rolled in...still getting settled. TurboDave is with me...and the nice welts I gave him are turning wonderfully purple and the paintball marks are completely intact on our bikes. BTW, Turbo did have one more chassis hit than originally counted. My throttle lock didn't work most of the ride back...until I realized it was gooey from yellow paint. ;)

Paintball Jousting - Collateral Damage (just off camera...see picture above)

The Gladiators Move Onto the Field

One of the early casualties of Paintball Gun Jousting.....It's a Good Day to Be Painted Orange

P9200423c.JPG

More casualties roll in. Competitors should have only had 12 rounds....so how 15 appear turns out to be a sporting scandal and many teams are DQ'ed. The orange paint shows up well though.

P9200432b.JPG

Here's some context of the Jousting Course. Drive by the right of the right blocks of wood away or left the left blocks coming. You can fire when you're between the two blocks.

P9200435b.JPG

For the record an admin REALLY wanted to shoot another admin and had this righteous strategy....but poor Dave just was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He had 11 hits on the bike and his body...out of 12 shots. OUCH!

P9200413b.JPG

Then this picture....the admin felt REALLY REALLY bad.

P9200429b.JPG

But then this happened. As I was filming some of the jousts I could hear the click-click-click of markers going off and then thwap-thwap-thwap of bikes being hit 50 feet from each other. Then I heard this THWUP!..........UHHHHHHHHH! 100 feet to my right....just in time to see a popular California LD rider double over.

P9200427b.JPG

My bike was hit a few times.

Just got home. I didn't get out of Gerlach untill freaking noon. All I am saying is don't ever agree to go to a bar with RenoJohn after the bonfire.

I am going to bed.

Now that looks like a lot of fun!!

Does that paint wash off the riding gear pretty easily?

Nice pics and video.

Yes... the paint is 100% water-soluble.

But if you set the air-pressure on your assault rifle up to the maximum, and then sneak up on a poor, innocent geriatric dude, and pepper his body with paintball rounds at 20 feet away, his torso looks like this:

Here is one of the best Motorcycle Jousting photos from the weekend. Nearest the camera is SkooterG (who is ducking LIKE A COMPLETE ***** behind his barn door windscreen), with Paul Peloquin (BIODSL) riding *****. They are having their *** handed to them by the eventual Winner of the event, none other than the forums very own Iron Maiden, Lisa Stevens.

You are looking right down the barrel of her gun... a sight her victims saw all afternoon:

Appears as though said *****'s windshield in the down position. Tactical error or rule of engagement?

In fact, that was a ROE.... windscreens, if adjustable, had to be in their lowest setting.

We were after maximum carnage.

Too, points were assessed depending on the gunshot placement. A chassis hit was worth x points A lower-body hit was worth 2x. A torso hit was worth 3x.

A head shot was worth 5x points.....

Let's clarify that one a bit. ;)

First point, I would have rather shot Skooter. When Turbo arrived to the line it was the luck of the draw.

Second point, Turbo's a big boy and wasn't wearing a jacket. ATGATT has never been more true!

Third point, we were the 2nd or 3rd joust...so if the owner of the gun turned up pressure it was VERY early in the session.

Fourth point, I had this strategy I was dying to try of riding through actually ahead of the other rider....to the far wood block...stop dead killing the bike....and then wait like a sniper for the rider to come into the zone himself. That way I was holding still, good aim, and just FRICKIN' lit him up! Kack, kack, kack, kack! (In fact, here's a link to a great set of pictures showing the exchange)

Fifth point, it took me 6 or 7 rounds of chassis hits before I dialed into his actual torso. And it was the very last 3 shots I caught him before he left the box at a very oblique angle well behind me....so it was more like 100 feet or so. Anybody ever see a guy wince as he gets hit on an old surgery scar with just a t-shirt on? It made me feel VERY bad. Yes, I sat there and giggled as crowd laughing......but I felt VERY VERY bad.

Sixth point, yeah....ignore the last five poitns....I'm just a sadistic meanie that likes to bruise people collecting Social Security.

Yo Ig, you gonna post up the video of me taking on a highway patrol's finest?

I've told my boss about it and now he needs some clarification on "I got in a shootout with a cop"

I'm having a bit of trouble finding that one. PM and we'll see if I can find it offline. ;)

Ok, here are some quick pics to share for now. I'll see if I can't get more up later.

Yamha Vs BMW Grudge match. Beerme was driving, and I was the gunner.

As you can clearly see, we kicked some serious BMW *** on this run.

A little later in the day....

Heh.... good thing I don't have that problem.... :D

Here is a video REFUTING all the "point 1, point 2, point 3" stuff above that Iggy is trying to use to hide behind in his slaughter of the innocent Geriatric Dude!

Watch Iggy as he makes up his own rules, STOPS HIS BIKE in the riding lane, just so's he can just shoot poor TurboDave mercilessly!!

Iggy assassinates TurboDave using "creative" rules!

Yeah, I believe this was when you were explaining that there were some 'particulates' in your drink. I have several other shots from this time I'll try to get posted up later.

Dale,

Thank you so much for clarifying things. I am so glad you reinforced the larger life lesson that when an event master DQ's you....just smile.

Yes, I am a mean person that likes to bruise our nation's veterans and terrorize AE owners. The video proves that I am a cheat of the worst kind...and that my throttle is pretty smooth as I did the lazy circle. I just hope I'm not banned from future .68 caliber events. ;)

Also, the larger truth is that this year's event was very timely and the best possible choice!

Instead of a bunch of nut jobs wandering the desert with REAL weapons and risk shooting each other with pesky lead and copper bullets......to let them loose and purposely mark each other without risk of serious damage.

It was a hoot!

...just found...evidence that beerme is a frickin' good shot.

IIRC, the quote is:

"There appears to be particulate matter in my drink"

More video! This one is jousting from the POV of the motorcycle. Clicky

. Advance to 0:40.

Here's the link to my photos: Gerlachfest 2008

Gerlachfest0852.jpg

And one last abhorrent sight. I couldn't post it in it's full size, as everyone would have had to claw out their eyes.

This is NWS and not suitable for small children. Or anyone for that matter. Other than that, no comment.
