I was doing some reading over the weekend and thought I'd share with everyone the conclusion I've come to...
So when I was growing up I always loved motorcycles. I started with a mini bike at about age 5 and rode dirt bikes outside of the small farming town I grew up in. When I was 15 I was able to save up and buy my first street bike a 1982 XJ750J Yamaha Maxim. (which I still have) I rode the bike through my last years of high school and through college and even took my wife on a ride for our first date. While having the Maxim I dreamed of the bad ass VMAX. I loved the look and thought the power would be outstanding. I always thought when I had made some money after college I'd buy one. After I won 26k on a single hand of poker I had the cash and I started researching all sorts of bikes. I still thought the VMAX was the bike for me but after reading the VMAX forums I came to realize it was a dated design. I found if I bought one I probably wouldn't be satisfied until I put another 6-8k of cash into the bike. I ended up seeing a sport tourer BMW that caught my eye and moved my research focus to the sport touring class. The sport touring class seemed to give me the best of both worlds as the bikes had some performance and could accommodate my wife and I comfortably. I test rode a BMW that had a 22k price tag and thought it was okay, but after I test rode a 2006 FJR I knew it was the right bike for me. The FJR just seemed to behave a lot like my Maxim, but with A LOT of improvements. The FJR seemed to fit so well and with the farkles brought out my inner geek a bit. I've had a couple summers with the FJR now and have taken some long rides. (18 days this summer) I'm completely sold.
Now the 2009 VMAX has been released and I've gone back out and read some of the initial reviews and I have to say I think my tastes have changed. The new VMAX looks like a nice bike and I'd love to ride one, but it still doesn't seem like as good of fit as the FJR. I look back and am very happy with my choice to purchase the FJR. I've also loved the experience with the FJR forum members. (Thanks everyone)
Anyone else have a similar type of story?
One very happy FJR owner.
