I just got done speaking with the mad Englishman John Young down in the parking lot.

He is as nervous as a whore in church. However, he is encourage by the format.... now he can concentrate on just keeping the Trident moving. He told me: "I'll feel better when it breaks down for the first time, and I fix it, and keep moving".

Iron Butt legend in the making, right there..... I'm pulling for him....

Alrighty, then... time for me to head down to the Impound Lot and start tormenting the riders.... :D

MO should be a must on leg 1. Dropping along I-29 for ND., SD, MN, IA, NE, KS and MO.

Some Capitals on the route too. I would think bonus' in leg 2 will be in the repeat states,

steering riders away from obvious paths of "Easy" state collecting.

You know Iggy planned this IBR? I have the proof here in post #76: https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?showtopic=128736&st=60

The 4 corners... 2 of them should be done on leg 1. Florida will add 500 miles though.
Can't do that as parts of I-29 are closed. Extra challenging this year.

Well, I gota think all of them should be sleeping - assuming they arn't too wired. I just spent 10 minutes on Google maps and came up with 25 states in 4460 miles and 77 hrs. for leg 1. That's all the northern tier states and New England - and I'm a just rookie arm chair rally rider. I've no idea what a 4 corners requires but I gota think top 10 contenders know of the top of their heads what that takes if they haven't already done one. Oh yea, do ya do MO or leave it for the 3rd leg?? Looks liek they better do it on leg 1.

So will we really get to see a composite spot for the riders???

You guys need to read this before you get too far into your route planning 48 States or Bust

In years past the riders have always been spread all over the map. With this format it will be interesting to see how many riders end up, maybe not riding together, but seeing each other on the road a lot more frequently.

I like that for the riders who are just looking to finish they have made this "easier," but at the same time for the riders who are looking to WIN, they have made it very difficult.

Thems sneaky bastards!

10 blips on the Spotwalla link as of now.

Lots of pre-launch pics linked here:

Well I thought there would be some FJRs with car tires since mileage will be helpful. Heck, a rear motorcycle tire will be squared off in about 5000 mi. anyway I would think. I wonder if the fires or other situations in the country will have other interstate areas closed. I guess we will hear.

And... they're off!

I'm pulling for Wendy C.

I watched her and RenoJohn all through the 10n10 last year. It was pretty amazing to see her spot tracks at the Outer Banks when everyone else was much closer to the barn. Very cool.

I don't think they are letting anyone know who's SPOT is using what code, but I might have that wrong since the format for the rally is so different.

You know, if some motorcycle vendor was smart they would sponsor the Spotwalla link, or something similar to it. I mean look at the number of hits the Spotwalla link is getting, and you know that 90% of those hits are from people really in to LD riding.

I was running a Pilot Road 1 in 2003 and got to Lake City Fla for the half-way point with plenty of tread left. I was even considering skipping the tire swap because they looked so good. Given my tires had already been shipped to a nearby dealership and I had a service scheduled, I went ahead with the tire swap. When I got home after the rally the Lake City PR1's lasted a good while longer, too.

All bikes are off.... the only one to have a problem was our own Good2Go, who's FJR would not start!

Tom Austin slapped voltmeter on his battery, it read 11.6 volts - no good.

Tom Austin then used his Beemer (car) to jump Good2Go; his bike fired up immediately, and he is on his way!

Here are our riders 45 minutes after the Start:

Is there any way to turn on the tracking for the riders? It's going to be tough to remember where everybody has been as we go forward

Aye Carumba! I do believe that is a fairly new battery he has in there. Only a few months old. He must have left something on. Hope there will be no more problems for him. Instead of giving him the easy way, you should have had him push start the bike. That would have been *quality* entertainment for the all the folks gathered!

No.

Consider what's being offered as a HUGE change from the last event. It's a big privilege to get this. :)

As of 11 a.m. there seems to be three obvious plans.

  • Go directly towards Oregon (probably Umatilla) (the ones on I-90 near Snoqualmie Pass)
  • Go to Olympia first (the capital yields you more points) (the ones south on I-5 from Seattle)
  • Go to Blaine and get the first of 4 corners. (the ones north on I-5 from Seattle.

and

  • Big question mark if anybody heads to Hyder, Alaska
