Don & I, along with Tucson Joe and Cec headed out this morning around 8am headed back to Arizona. As we were heading down I-25 at a very rapid rate of speed, we came upon several other attendees headed in the same direction, but unfortunately made dust of them on those wet & rainy roads. As we turned West on I-40, Joe & Cec disappeared in the early morning traffic. Don & I cracked up the throttle and seemed to get air as we peaked 9 Mile Hill, then in a flash we were gone and New Mexico was quickly behind us, as Arizona could be seen in the near distance. From the minute we left Taos, the rain was fairly constant, but not so bad that it slowed us down any. We stopped for our first fill-up in Grants, NM to not only fill up our gas tanks but to add our jacket liners because it was cold as hell. Once we reached Don's turn off Holbrook, we both decided to top off our tanks. I quickly filled mine, then the power went off at the gas station so Don had to make due with what he had in his tank because the pumps quick just as I finished filling mine. So as Don turned south towards Payson, Phoenix and home in Chandler, I jumped back on I-40 west bound. Within minutes it was pouring once again all the way into Flagstaff and beyond, with my car tire throwing a Rooster Tail 30 feet into the air as I moved along at 90mph, luckily AJ's cousins in blue were all busy with other unfortunate folks as I cruised on by. About 80 miles from home the skies cleared and as expected the temp didn't wait to start climbing the ladder. Entering Kingman the temperature was at 101 degrees, then dropping into the Valley of Death it immediately jumped to 106 and stayed there until reaching my turnoff bound for Lake Havasu where nowhere but Death Valley can conquer the hottest little city in America, the temp climbed to a mild 108 and stayed there until I reached my living-room with my A/C doing its job of keeping me alive and comfortable. I pulled into my driveway at 4pm, 673 miles and 8 hours after leaving the Kachina Lodge in beautiful Taos, NM.
Just like last year, Taos was lots of fun. We did some beautiful riding in a southern direction this year which proved to be really cool because it included a tour of the Los Alamos Atomic Museum. Got to see some friends from last year and made some new friends this year. Thanks to Cheryl and her crew at the Kachina Lodge for the hospitality, thanks to AJ and Cynthia for taking care of the shirts this year. My shirts were great and of high quality. Thanks to AJ again for bringing us all the opportunity to gain several additional pounds by offering mucho candy bars. Most of us missed the rain during our daily rides, except for a sprinkle or two. The real rain started the night before we left, but even that made for an interesting trip. Oh, Thanks to Petey for the riding lesson.
