2013 Cats & Dacks Ride 6/14 & 6/15

Hey Gang,

Mark your calender, change your tires, and pack your bags, on June 14 and 15 for the Cats & Dacks ride. Be there or be square. Edit: Friday 6/14 will be the Dacks ride, and Saturday 6/15 will be the Cats ride. Both routes will be the best mix of roads the area has to offer. The Cats ride is about 315 miles long, Dacks ride is about 326 miles long. Both rides are kickstands up @ 9;00 AM and start at the Microtel in Johnstown NY (base camp),and both will be back at around 7:00pm. I got a block of 15 rooms and a group rate of $75.60 per night. The block will be held until 5/13/13, so make your reservation before then. Cancellation by 6:00 p.m. the day of arrival. Make sure when you make reservation you say it's for the "Cats & Dacks Ride".

Edit: We'll have a 10x20 canopy set up for Parking lot social (PLS) out behind the hotel.

Friday dinner will be where ever you want. There are many places close by.

Any bike is allowed, all that I ask is that any loud pipes bring up the tail so as to not bug anyone.

Like any ride "Ride Your Own Ride". It's not a race, it's about having fun. There will be 2 or 3 groups of different riding styles, so there should be a group for all.

Routes will be posted here after scouting is done. The Dacks route will be the same as last year, and I'm almost done with the Cats route, but need to check on, and decide on a lunch stop.

NOTE; I was told by the staff at Super 8 that they remembered us from last year and that someone in our group was talking to them inappropriately. They said they knew we were drinking, and just blew it off, but they did mention it to me. So I apologized to them.
I want to say now that this is not a keg party or a college spring break, and that kind of behavior is not good for the group. It's a group ride, and having fun is great, but not at someone else's expense. I would hate to see 1 ruin it for the group.

That being said. The manager at the Microtel was reluctant to let us set up the canopy for a PLS, because he's had them go bad before. I told him we are all a mature group and there wouldn't be a problem. The only way he would go for it is we have to be all done and quiet by 9:00 PM. Now I'm sure if a quiet few stay up and socialize it won't be a problem. The Microtel is a lot nicer than the Super 8, and has a nice back yard for PLS, which is why we're having it there. So lets give them a shot. I'm sure if we have a good stay, the PLS won't be a issue next year.

Last year's ride still puts a grin on my face (even though I was part of the <ahem> slower two-up group) and this is now high on the priority list. Just gotta see how it juggles out with CFR if that's to happen.

Re. Super 8 motel: Had a bit of an issue with Expedia not wanting to refund my Sunday night room fee even though I cancelled well within the motel's cancellation policy window. After the clerk spent some time on the phone trying to straighten it out with no success, she then called the manager (owner?) who came from home. He too spent much time over the course of several phone calls and eventually I did receive a full credit. Learned a lesson about Expedia but thought I should give kudos to a staff that gave the extra attention when they didn't really have to.

[All that said though, do think the Microtel is a nicer facility and better choice.]

I have a room reserved for CFR, but Paul wants to go to SW-FOG and it is at the same time.

We were talking about Key West and New Orleans in the spring so we have a lot of places to go and have not yet worked up a schedule.

I'm thinking about combining Key West, New Orleans, and maybe the Gathering of the Clans if they have it in May. That would give us a chance to ride a bit in Colorado. I think that's why Paul wants to go to SW-FOG instead of CFR,. He loves the big sweepers in the Rockies. And then the Cat's and Daks and CFR. That leaves NERDS and EOM for later in the season.

As I already mentioned to roadrunner (privately), Josie and I have plans for CFR Ontario this spring, which is the following weekend. Unfortunately, there is just no way for us to get away for two weekends in a row. Having added the Friday Cats ride back into the ride plan is an awesome idea! I'm sure that you folks will have a great time.

What a great dilemma to be in: Too many great FJR events to attend.
