FWIW, It appears that neither of the other big 4 (Kawasaki and Suzuki) have risen to that particular challenge either. Come to think of it, nobody makes a bike that competes with a Gold Wing for ULHTB. Maybe the closest is the new(ish) BMW 1600 in touring trim? But even that has a slightly more sporting take on "touring".
Harley and Victory, not that either is in same class.

45 degree V-twins vs. a 6 cylinder's smoothness?

Umm, no. Not the same class at all.

The V-4 in the Yamaha Royalstar Venture isn't bad and the bike is a pretty good tourer. They still manage to sell a few of them. Not in the same league as the 'Wing but way ahead of the HD Ultra Classic IMHO. The bike is in serious need of an update - there has been talk and speculation about a third generation Yamaha Venture for longer than the FJR Gen III.

Edit: I owned this one for a couple of years

Glovebox area looks like a water collection point perhaps...with that bevel aft of it.
The rider pictured is demonstrating the cure for that.
Peg feelers- maybe they'll be reasonably priced.

Color- Think 'stealth'. It may not look racy, and I'm fine with that- the cops can trigger on the blinged out dayglo Gixxer with blue accent lights trolling along at 55.1mph.

NSTIW- the day after I picked up my '03, I came around a corner at about warp s^H^H^H^H^H^H the speed limit, and the cop sitting there looked at his radar gun, looked at the big sport touring bike (whooooooooosh), then lit up the sport bike I'd just passed.

I'm with FJR Pilot. I don't mind stealth colors. I don't know how many times the cops dismissed my grey R1100S when I had the bags on. One time, I actually saw a trooper smacking the side of the radar gun like it was flawed when I passed.

I've had the exact same thing happen to me.

Someone in this long list of readables mentioned an imobilizer type key (with a chip), so much for duplicate keys.

Sure you're not reading the Canadian website? Gen 2 have had immobilizers type keys for years while the U.S. has not.

Just a heads up. Ash On Bikes will have the first press review of the '13 on Monday.
So far NUTTIN!!!

Big tease is all..........
I'm thinking Ash loves the new FJR and hasn't brought it back!

"Google Translate" version

2013 marks a new stage for the Yamaha FJR 1300. GT sports reference Yamaha again behind on his audiences to advance electronic security and opportunity to evolve aesthetically and technically. The authorization provided by this bike is mature and a real step forward that we could check more than 500 km.

Just outside the Cologne Fair, we are already close to Madrid, to take control of the Yamaha 1300 FJR 2013 under a changing sky Spanish. Admittedly, it is not a brand new bike, but the builder forks, this renewal is strategic.

Since 2001, the Sport GT Yamaha enjoying a brilliant career and is now part of the landscape, including in the ranks of the police when it was passed a few thousand copies.

But since 2006, and adding the AS version to electronic transmission, FJR 1300 had received only minor changes. Also, the 2013 vintage marks a new stage in his career. The ultimate last stand before a complete overhaul of the model? Nothing is less certain ...

Far, near, to touch, there is not to say the Yamaha FJR 1300 A 2013 is still a very nice machine, rewarding and carefully assembled. Each is painted plastic and / or varnish, nothing protrudes. The general line of the new Yamaha FJR 1300 is close to that of 2001. The appearance of flashing LED lights and brings the traveler Yamaha a key well in the air.

GT known among the most accessible market FJR 1300 is no exception to the rule in 2013. Perched at 805 mm in the lower position, the seat is enough to make the templates smile means: from 1,65 m, one can ask at least one foot flat. Reassuring, especially in the low-speed maneuvers, the 289 kg Kerb announced immediately remember your good memories. No miracle this side: FJR 1300 A rest mass.

Yamaha advances have reduced the effort needed for central deflection of 30%. If this calculation scholar thoughtful enough to leave, we must recognize that the exercise is not a chore or more. Startup, the four-cylinder line 1298 cm3 blurts its full sound. Despite the amendment made on the exhaust line, we recognize the melody proper to the FJR.

Ergonomics is always impeccable, and natural position, with a bust sufficiently recovered. The clutch lever is very flexible, as the new accelerator to support electronic technology perfectly controlled by Yamaha. The passage of the first does not show too sound, and the other reports, the Yamaha is in the right category average. A well know better than BMW K1600GT, but less pleasant than Kawasaki GTR 1400.

Two or three maneuvers demonstrate agility slightly higher than the previous vintage. Difficult to judge whether this is due more new chassis settings or Metzeler Roadtec Z8 great Interact now fitted as standard. Over the boulevards, it quickly takes its brands. Or at least, we rediscover a chorus known without making pun vis-à-vis a manufacturer that also makes musical instruments.

The relatively low center of gravity provides a good balance at low speeds, while panniers are always well integrated. Morality, Yamaha FJR 1300 is still able to show the interfile. Remains that Yamaha does not show as magical in terms of sensation of lightness that some GT market, BMW R1200RT in mind. The GPS indicates to turn left to the highway, another strategic sector for a touring bike that wants versatility.

A 130 km / h, the four-cylinder purrs only 4 000 r / min, far from the red zone at 9 000 r / min. Nevertheless, we find ourselves in an area of small vibrations slightly unpleasant tingling although none is felt. The highway is fluid, it is the perfect time to play with the new stalk on the left.

Rather than increasing orders, Yamaha brought together setting the bubble, the heated grips and scrolling the various trips of a button, housed in the place of the headlight, relegated to the rocker beam / headlight. At the beginning, no longer have direct access to setting the bubble something irritating. But as installation and handling of the new order prove easy, we made it fast. We only regret having eyes off the road to navigate between different functions.

The highway is also the perfect playground to test the careful protection. And we must recognize that the engineers at Yamaha have managed their business rather: small and large able to find a set of suitable bubble, can protect the chest and relieve neck. In addition, the new FJR 1300 A 2013 model seems less generate the thrust in the back characteristic of large GT. Not bad at all.

Surveyed sclerosis German Spanish highway still fluid invited to test again. It is surprising then motor behavior in halftone. The rhythm, and in particular between 120 km / h and 150 km / h, the Yamaha FJR 1300 A 2013 gives you a little bit about your hunger on the fifth and final report. Obviously, it is possible to exceed a rotation of the handle, but the thrust is not very hearty for 1300. Other GT we have left the best memories.

Without doubt this is the fault of the work done on the staging of the gearbox or the injection mapping. Engineers have sought to lower the engine speed, without losing enthusiasm, but some paces, the new FJR 1300 lack of nerve. However, maximum performance is far from being lowered, simply pull the third report realize.

Les146, 2 horses free version are there, even if the extension very linear portends a successful French clamping. In addition, the speed is shameful: almost twice the 120 km / h on the highway allowed Spanish. Back at a rate less stimulating for fixed cameras, I play with the cruise control, easy to use and will be well appreciated at motorway links

The road book makes us leave the motorway for departmental winding for a nice climb to 1800 meters. The tarmac like a anaconda snakes and FJR reveals a very healthy behavior, but more stable Agile. With new socks knitted by Metzeler, Yamaha takes the corner with happiness, but you soon realize that the anticipation is required.

Entries curve require careful academic, or possibly a rear brake light support. That, anyway, stimulates slightly the front brake because the FJR 1300 ABS A inherits from a coupled close to that of the Super Ténéré XTZ 1200. If we decide to change course abruptly, FJR 1300 unveils its inertia motion and suspensions.

Similarly, if one grasps the front brake input curve, FJR 1300 stiffens and freezes if one squeezes the lever in the middle of the turn. Other bikes also offer best heavy neutrality. In fact, we can not wait to try the AS version with a fork and semi-active suspensions, which would undoubtedly improve the performance, with better weight transfer under control.

But over the miles, we realize that the FJR 1300 is more efficient focusing of the output curve. Increasing the net gas early, the couple always generous door motorcycle in its entirety and gives lightness. We understand that this is a 2013 vintage motorcycle doing great curves: perfect stability, determination of transparent electronic throttle control, traction control, which is just as, or better to allow it turns out forcefully without actually deviate from the selected trajectory.

It is not systematic, but fate sometimes good things. Two FJR 1300 are part of the entourage of your servant. Be many opportunities to test these different vintages. And if there is a setting or progress is palpable, it is the braking.

The ABS coupled model 2013 has an excellent feeling and perfectly controllable power with a much finer ABS in 2006 for example. The 2013 model triggers antilock much later, leaving work the grip of the tires and not giving this rebound effect in the pedal or lever so sensitive on 2006. Sessions braking on the pavement or bumps are so much more pleasant or reassuring, with distances that are seemingly shorter.

Back to a less frantic pace, I decided to ride the torque and flexibility. Yamaha FJR 1300 approval then reveals top flight. The four-cylinder smoothness can cross the villages in the fifth and leave a breath, then the engine smooth and devoid of a sudden can wrap the corners with pleasure, as long as you have grabbed the handle the beautiful.

An hour and a half turns later, the first few minutes of concentration gives way to the banana under the helmet and eventually fatigue will occur even once arrived safely. Collar fans can rest assured, the versatile answer this FJR 1300.

Yamaha FJR 1300 came in 2001, which suggests a design from the late 90s. Meanwhile, most modern motorcycle design came on the market. From there, the third generation finally looks like a healthy development of a database already healthy.

The overall quality of the bike there is born more than ten years are still there, and some progress is sensitive: engine rounder, less strokes to the transmission, ABS, which has nothing to do, successful protection .. . short, it is almost the same, but it is all better. What could be more normal after all, except that it was possible to miss.

In the end, it comes down from the saddle with an overall feeling of quality, a bike that can accompany you for hours. Yamaha and chose to remain faithful to the original concept: a motorcycle GT tends to stay fairly compact sports everyday use. The arrival of new technologies (mapping, traction control ...) pushed the sale price, but the allocation of standard equipment is relevant: bags, bubble electric, heated grips, ABS, traction control, cruise control, 12- V, adjustable seat, trip computer ...

Morality, even at € 17 499, the Yamaha FJR 1300 A 2013 remains a sure value in its class. Those who want more, will have to wait until spring 2013, the arrival time FJR 1300 AS with specific semi active suspension and a gearbox with electronic assistance review against € 19,499.
