BeemerDon's wonderful clean and beautiful 2013 arrived to the Hondarosa yesterday. Put her on the lift for a once-over inspection.. oil clean and good. tires a bit low (been sitting for fairly long time), coolant good. Brake lights. check.

Hey wait, this rear brake pedal has alot of movement! Bled the rear slave cylinder.. no bubbles. Clean fluid.

Ride it, and the rear brakes work.. just seemingly excessive travel as compared to what I think I recall on KrZy8, the 06. Of course, KrZy8 been layed up in the shop for over 2 months now, and I'm old and forgetful..

So then, is the normal for a gen 3? Any tips?

Check the brake disc isn't warped into a dish shape, could be caused by a binding brake and overheating.

DAMHIK.

Well, I sniffed the video, that there smells exactly like a KZ1300. Exactly. And his spell checker didn't catch it

KZ1300 with old spongy hoses, leaking master cylinder, binding brakes with a warped disk and excess pedal travel. Yup, fer sure.

This is too funny! I really did NOT notice I posted a video of the 79 KZ1300!

Here's the real video.. It appears the travel is even greater on the FJR and this IS a serious request for thoughts and ideas!

DC,

My 2014 rear brake pedal is much softer than my 06. Bled front and back several times with little improvement. Brake works fine just a lot of travel. Interested to see what others have to say.

Looking at the "real" video, I withdraw my suggestion, I think a warped disc would require more than a light finger to squeeze the pads in.

You sure there is fluid in those lines? Is there any pad material in the rear or front linked brake? That is just wrong.
The front brakes are perfect. They start squeezing immediately upon pulling the lever back. I did not check for brake pad thickness on the rear. The rear brakes work, all the way to ABS actuation it just takes a lot of travel.

Does yours have this much travel?

No. On mine, normal deflection is ~ 1inch pressing with my finger. Yours looks to be mucho more than that (maybe 3 inches?)

Cause would be air in the system somewhere.

I wonder if it might be soft up front for the two linked pistons? Hmm.
..and I've never messed with bleeding the ABS unit. Would need a FSM to read first before just jumping in.

The bike does have YES.. wonder if this might be covered?

No. Yours is excessive. Mine is way more than the 06 ever was. It was like this when I picked it up new from the dealer.

Just checked. Pedal travels 2 inches with one finger push.

Well, if mine only moves 1 inch, (and I've never f'ed with it) then both of you guys have some air in your lines. Maybe it's up in the ABS block, which is probably hard to get out from the bleed screw down at the slave. Gravity and all that...

In bleeding the brakes, did you also bleed the lower front (right side)? This piston pair is activated by the rear pedal; not the lever.

There's also that detent about half way down- a clear sign of not lubricated properly - I would pull the lever assembly, clean everything, and lubeitlubeitlubeit. Then I would check that the rear caliper is indeed actuating the cup, and then I would bleed it again. If that doesn't clear it up, then I would suspect the ABS block. That's the point at which you use the YES.

Have fun, wish I was there !!

So, all your motorcycles have the same problem. That's usually a sign of owner failure, not hardware failure

If you haven't bled the front brakes, do the front linked brakes, then the rear brakes.

I'll bet Skooter had something to do with it. You should sterilize the whole thing. before you bleed the brakes. Probably in the linked brake system like Ionbeam says. I run into it a lot on goldwings.
