Saskatchewan Government Insurance or SGI as it is know in Saskatchewan has decided to increase insurance costs to motorcyclists a whoppong 79% on average and in some cases it is much higher. This insurance agency is so out of touch that when I purchased my brand new 2009 FJR in the spring of 2010 and went to purchase insurance for the motorcycle they did not even know how to classify the motorcycle. SGI has three classifications for insurance "Crusier/Touring" "Sport" or "Dual Purpose". The person at the counter studied the bill of sale and did not know what classification to put the bike in. Now I like to think that riding an FJR has some excusivity but I have seen a few FJR's driving around Saskatchewan with Saskatchewan plates so this not the first time they had to register and insure a Yamaha FJR 1300. So I picked "Crusier/Touring" as the FJR to me is first and foremost a "Touring" motorcycle complete with luggage and fairings and accomodations for two people. So if you are a Saskatchewan FJR rider I would like to know how SGI classified your motorcycle when you registered it. As my FJR is registered as a "Crusier/Touring" motorcycle my insurance costs have gone from $1669.00 to $2513.00 annually. Had I been foolish enough to inform the counter person at SGI that the motorcycle was a "Sport" motorcycle my insurance would have gone from $2263.00 to $5456.00 annually. So if you are a Saskatchewan FJR rider and you have your motorcycle registered as a "Sport" motorcycle please contact me as you have a legal right to register your motorcycle as a "Crusier/Touring" as there is legal precedence that the FJR is a "Crusier/Touring" and I will help you out with legal evidence that this model of motorcycle has been registered this way in Saskatchewan. Maybe you can even get a refund from them but I wouldn't hold my breath. If I can be of help in any way feel free to contact me.

Here is some text and links from a posting in Saskatchewan.

Contact your MLA or the rate review board. We all own SGI and we pay the salaries of the the aforementioned. We as a people have the right to speak out and tell SGI that they can not impose ludicrous rate increases on just one sector of the driving public.
Most of the motorcycle values will be less than what the insurance will cost.

Are those the rates for all riders, regardless of age, experience, and riding records? What kind of coverage do you get?

Yes ,there are some small discounts based on years of accident free driving but they would maybe save you 1 to 3 percent.

The coverage is basic considering the very high rates.

Hey 'Rider', haven't hear much from you since Castlegar.

Those rates are outrageous. Here's a copy of my ICBC renewal. I'm mid-sixties with a 43% safe driver/rider discount, basic insurance with $2,000,000 3rd party.

Why so much more in a province that has no corners, no hills and you can only ride four months of the year?

Take it easy and good luck with this.

Al.

With Progressive I pay around 500.00 a year. What the heck you do that you pay that much? Of course I am older so that may play into it. I also pay cash so no financial people involved. I could not afford to drive a bike if that is what I had to pay. I also had a 20,000 claim in 2010 for the total of the K 1200 LT plus the add on coverage for upgrade parts.

I don't think they want you to ride in Saskatchewan

.

Is SGI the only motorcycle insurance company you can use in Saskatchewan?

I just love when someone from the United States tells me how much they pay and wonders why I pay so much......

You can not compare apples and oranges....

Just waiting for someone from Quebec to chime in on their cost

Those prices ar "F'n" nuts...never realized how "F'd" up is is up there. Last time I was up to Canada, I did make a contribution to the OPP

Overall, Canadian MC insurance rates are extremely high. I have no idea why but coverage on my bike is higher than full coverage on two cars. I have never had an accident on any of the vehicles or any speeding tickets. I guess its because they can... New Brunswick doesn't have provincial government-run insurance so its not just a matter of government monopoly.

I find Canadian rates are all over the map. On Prince Edward Island For my FJR and for my previous bike a Yamaha Venture (1200cc) I pay less than $200 for liability and if I choose full coverage (Collision, fire and theft and liability) it would be in the $600.00 range. However different companies quoted double and triple those rates here. I find that you have to shop around to get a decent rate and have to be prepared to change companies if you don't get what you want. The Venture cost me about $400 for liability 6 years ago when I started riding again but dropped over the years to $200. I heard there was a big increase in Ontario a few years ago with some sport bikes not insurable at all. It sounds like Saskatchewan has a cash cow that they are going to milk to death. I know my riding days would be over if I had to come up with that each year. Crazy!

I'm with Tom, waiting for a Quebecer to chime in.

After they 'fixed' the government run insurance rates there, it was GREAT pickings for used sport bikes in Ontario! It was like a fire sale, nobody in Quebec could afford to insure them.

As for here in Ontario, it really does pay to shop around. I did that last year and saved $700/yr on one bike alone. Over $3000 across my car, 3 bikes and my tenants ins.

Bungie I just checked your FJR rates with a quote from Todos Santos Insurance Company, their office is on the right next to the old Ford; 2000 Mexican Pesos ($173 CAN) a year for you, did I mention it is 79F degrees in Baja California Sur and the waves are running at a consistent 4' swell! jes' sayin' and nuff' said, Hombre!

Sorry to take so long to answer a question posed by bgross, the car rates are going up minimally, probably in the 2 to 3 percent range. There is quite a ground swell in Saskatchewan already over this, there are going to be a lot of disgruntled motorcyclists by the time the smoke clears on this one. The value of motorcycles is going to take a beating also, I am not a HD rider but I really feel for the dealerships as they have motorcycles only, no quads, snowmobiles or boats, jet skis and personal watercraft to fall back on, could be a very tough year for the HD dealerships in Saskatchewan!

Just realized you are North of the Border. I understand now. Do not see why you are complaining. All the benefits you receive up there has to worth the pain of insurance and vehicle registration? Right?

Huh? huron52 has to live next to Hosers Bungie, yamafitter, FJRPierre, Ray and FJRob1300; you call that a benefit, eh!

WRONG!

What are the "benefits" you would be referring to? The insurance I pay allows me to drive the bike on public Saskatchewan roads, covers repair of the bike in an accident, with a $700.00 deductable and "dubious" health care for recovery from an accident. I get the same health care though if I am riding a bicycle on a public street and get hit and I pay $0.00 insurance for my bicycle. So a person can't figure any health benefits in the equation. I realize south of the border you pay dearly for health services but lets compare apples to apples. The insurance here just covers the above mentioned services plus liability, which is kind of a joke when you have a no-fault system. The point being that coverage hasn't changed but the prices have skyrocketed! Here are the charts for the proposed hikes, for really gut wrenching stuff look at the sport bike charts, you think I am up in arms? Talk to the sport bike association in Saskatchewan, they be some tee'ed off dudes!

SGI were whining in the insurance press that they are "losing" $10 million per year on insuring bikes (quite a lot if you remember that there are only 1 million residents in the province).

SGI must be attributing all of their medical and income replacement costs for riders injured by left-turning cages, to the insurance premiums collected from the victims/riders? Or there are a lot of Harleys being insured so that they can be "stolen" and shipped elsewhere?
