Saskatchewan Government Insurance or SGI as it is know in Saskatchewan has decided to increase insurance costs to motorcyclists a whoppong 79% on average and in some cases it is much higher. This insurance agency is so out of touch that when I purchased my brand new 2009 FJR in the spring of 2010 and went to purchase insurance for the motorcycle they did not even know how to classify the motorcycle. SGI has three classifications for insurance "Crusier/Touring" "Sport" or "Dual Purpose". The person at the counter studied the bill of sale and did not know what classification to put the bike in. Now I like to think that riding an FJR has some excusivity but I have seen a few FJR's driving around Saskatchewan with Saskatchewan plates so this not the first time they had to register and insure a Yamaha FJR 1300. So I picked "Crusier/Touring" as the FJR to me is first and foremost a "Touring" motorcycle complete with luggage and fairings and accomodations for two people. So if you are a Saskatchewan FJR rider I would like to know how SGI classified your motorcycle when you registered it. As my FJR is registered as a "Crusier/Touring" motorcycle my insurance costs have gone from $1669.00 to $2513.00 annually. Had I been foolish enough to inform the counter person at SGI that the motorcycle was a "Sport" motorcycle my insurance would have gone from $2263.00 to $5456.00 annually. So if you are a Saskatchewan FJR rider and you have your motorcycle registered as a "Sport" motorcycle please contact me as you have a legal right to register your motorcycle as a "Crusier/Touring" as there is legal precedence that the FJR is a "Crusier/Touring" and I will help you out with legal evidence that this model of motorcycle has been registered this way in Saskatchewan. Maybe you can even get a refund from them but I wouldn't hold my breath. If I can be of help in any way feel free to contact me.

Contact your MLA or the rate review board. We all own SGI and we pay the salaries of the the aforementioned. We as a people have the right to speak out and tell SGI that they can not impose ludicrous rate increases on just one sector of the driving public.
Most of the motorcycle values will be less than what the insurance will cost.
