George, aren't you overdue for a new one?
Yup, most definitely! OTOH, the '09 is set up really sweet and is THE smoothest FJR I've ever ridden. Combine that with farkling the S10 and I need to keep track of the piggy-bank. It's not too many years from retirement Mark!

Schwing!!! Yamaha does listen! Tough day on the job today. There were several new bikes on the demo line with less than five miles on the odometer.

Well, bikes can't be demo'd to the public unless they have one hundred miles on them so guess who had to ride a brand new R1, FZ-09, and FJR? That's right, yours truly. It's a tough job. ....

Anywho, for those that DO care i am happy to report the new '14 FJR's cruise control has a new limit WELL in excess of the '13 FJR's 80mph limit.

Woo-hoo! Great job Yamaha! They listened!
Can I tell you how jealous I am of your job now? I know you don't have much to do with the presentation portion of things, but I'd really like to talk to your bosses about their production needs...I just want to do something other than medical meetings for a while!

Perhaps we should wait for the 2015 to come out with 6 sp trans and ES standard. You know ABS came that route. If all the forum members make enough noise we could insist the 2015 have 6 sp, ES, better seat, bar riser, and three colors to choose from. After all the customer is always right!!!
Then they would have to increase the price to BMW levels. Bustanut will be housebroken and domesticated a long time before the FJR gets a 6 speed trans.

I don't know why a 6 speed is so important,

I like the way the 5 speed is geared, but that's just me.

5 is fine by me as well.

A few color choices would be nice.

For the seat and bar risers, everyone likes something different-how would any manufacturer be able to make a seat or handlebar design to suit everyone? The aftermarket companies have it pretty well covered.

A comment of the black inverted forks was made, guess one could put an Ohlins decal on them?

<thread drift>

Several of my motorcycles have been 6 speeds. My Honda's sixth gear was a double overdrive, yet it still pulled so hard with alacrity that it was almost never necessary to downshift to pass. So, I am a fan of 6 speed transmissions. Last fall I had a chance to put a lot of miles on a 6 speed BMW, ahhh! Well, mebby not. I absolutely did not like this transmission. At all. Now comes the epiphany that six gears alone does not always = love. It really matters what the final gear ratio is, if it is a close ratio or wide ratio transmission and how well the gears match the power band. Power band matching was the undoing of the BMW 6 speed. Since the later Gen's have a gear indicator I would stop shifting up into the ghost 6th gear as often and the 5 speed will serve me just fine.

My FZ1 has 6 speeds, Over 95K miles on that bike. I have yet to "hunt" for a 6th gear on the new FJR.

I do occasionally, but it does not bother me.

However, I also have found myself cruising at high speeds in 4th gear in a straight away if I have just been in a hellacious set of twisties.

Either way, I love the power band of the FJR...still usually downshift before a pass, and don't find that to be a problem either.

Any time I've "looked" for a sixth gear, a glance at the speedometer reveals that I am running in the vicinity of 100 mph. Engine a long way from wailing but feeling that it was time to upshift. If the lower gear ratios remained the same, 6th would likely get me into trouble.

Yeah - color choices would be my first choice.... Everything else is manageable !!

I hate that I have to wait out a year of red... BAHHHH

The truth be told, I don't give a Rat's Ass about the '13's 80 mph limit because I have never exceeded the speed limit on a FJR......is there any other reason to pay an extra $2k for a '14 instead of a leftover '13?
odd. your speed limits must really be low. you need to move where they're 80 to 85. with the typical optimistic settings from OEMs, that would require a cruise control to set at 85 to 90.

You're suggesting I should move just so I can legally ride faster on the freeways? Now that is odd!

Yamaha Canada's word on the 2014 cruise is it didn't change....... Yammy USA ain't sayin'......

  • Electronic cruise control system is also part of the YCC-T family of functions. The control buttons are located on the L.H.S. handlebar switch gear. The "settable range" is from 50 to 128 km/hr and the transmission must be in 3rd gear or higher. The cruise system can be cancelled by activating front or rear brakes, pulling in the clutch, completely closing the throttle grip or using the activation button.

You know, I don't think I would be bothered at all by it either way. If I was up at those speeds, usually am holding on to the bars anyways...

...except when I am doing handstands on the passenger seat...

Sheah right!

Other than stating that the factory cruise kicks major butt ass, I love that I can disengage it with the clutch. Just a quick little fan and I'm not flashing brake lights behind me.

Living in Canada (land of the 100km/h (63mph) speed limit) and running down the Eastern seaboard to get to the good riding, I've not found the 80mph limit not much of a limit at all.
