2018 FJR Air Deflectors

After years of riding Gold Wings and a RT I got used to good wind / weather protection so when I bought a FJR I started looking for ways to improve the wind / weather protection. One easy way was a bigger windscreen and I did that the first week, I bought the Puig touring windscreen. it is ok but not great.

I was still not happy so I started looking for more ideas and I remembered the AeroFlow AeroWings I had on my RT and saw that the fairing was somewhat similar so I contacted AeroFlow to see if they had tried the AeroWings on a FJR and they said no so I took a chance and ordered a set.

I had to make a small modification to the AeroWings to fit the FJR by cutting off about two inches from the front of the AeroWings and then they fit nicely.

This looks interesting. Do these air deflectors keep the wind from spilling over the bodywork and blowing on the sides of your torso? That is an area where there are no elements in my heated jacket liner.

It does help reduce the amount of air that hits the body. It is not the end all of air deflectors but it makes a big difference.

I am also working on another type of air deflector that were take offs from my GSA and I had them mounted to the FJR during my BBG+ ride last weekend.

Between the air deflector pictured above and the one pictured below really made a big difference in how much wind / rain / weather that hit my body. It was very quiet in the cockpit. 

I mounted the air deflectors to the AUX light mounting brackets.

How reversible is it?   I can see the value of a cold weather solution but can they be easily moved in and out for rain vs heat in the warm season?  

I like the idea of a quieter cockpit.   Wind noise is my biggest beef with the FJR.

The AeroFlow deflectors are mounted with 3M dual locks and the others have two nuts and bolts that take about 30 seconds to remove.

Is that small hole in the middle towards the cockpit side from the prior install?

And sorry for the thread-drift but do those (Clearwater?) aux light brackets rub or lay up against the paint?

Yes, the hole was from a prior install.

No, the Clearwater light brackets do not rub against the paint. They provide spacers for that.

On a related note, do you block the center, “beak” vent in cold weather, and if so, can you tell a difference? I have never been happy with FJR wind protection, even with my Cee Bailey screen. Good on you for experimenting. Very interesting and informative.

Yes, I have a dense foam that I bought on Amazon that fills the tunnel below the triple tree and it does make a difference.

Less air, rain and dirt come up through the tunnel.

It keeps me drier and warmer in the winter.

It also reduces the road noise.

I have 8 " buckskin fringes on my key fob  [nowhere else ! ]...with the vent under the shield open the fringes flail around madly in the wind... they lay flat with the vent plugged with foam..

I have been wondering about the big gap, might try plugging it this spring.

I rode all day with it plugged and couldn’t tell any downside. But temps were never hot.

I hope not. I have over 7,000 miles with it plugged with foam and no issues. Have to wait until summer to see if it causes any issues.

I am fairly certain the purpose is to reduce the low pressure zone behind the windscreen to reduce buffeting to the rider.  But it seems from reports that blocking it has no ill effects.

Someone with fab skills needs to take a stock set of the moveable knee panels and build them up so they flare out, providing more leg and hip coverage for winter riding. I think they’d sell....
