I was wondering if I could use 20w/50 oil in my gen 1.
Absolutely. Sure you can.

Of course you could also use #2 bunker oil in there.

I'm not saying it's a good idea though, just that you could...

Personally, I prefer to run with straight Slick 50. I mean, if 12 oz of that stuff is good enough to protect your engine for a jillion miles after it impregnates the surface of the metal, a gallon is bound to work even better, right?

Yep! just like MTV, "too much is never enough..!" (BTW, are you using the newer blend of the Slick 50 with the Dilithium crystals, or the older, Deuterium-infused blend..?)

Are you kidding me? I'm an old formula guy for sure. In the new formula, the bean counters at Slick50 industries got involved and they cut the all important slickerizer agents by a factor of 10!! Old school Rulez!!

What you really want to know: is the prospective oil's dynamic viscosity at your FJR's operating temperature measured in Saybolt Seconds Universal by a Brookfield Viscometer as per ASTM test.

Next, you'll need to compare that with Yamaha's technical data requirements for the FJR engine oil viscosity -- using the above methods.

You see -- the SAE 20/30/40/50 terms are very rough/crude measurements of viscosity and each one covers a wide range of viscosities. Some SAE 30s are almost in the SAE 20 range; while other SAE 30s are very close to SAE 40.

Finding this info may take a little 'digging'? -- but, will be well worth it for the conscientous FJR owner....

Until you take into account the effects of shearing, which creates an entirely different sheep.

Sheep? Oh, No! Some of the guys here won't sleep a wink knowing there's a virgin left.

Jeez, he's just on the board a month.

as far as I recollect, no one's had an instance where they've had FJR engine problems related to oil choice

that's probably true extended to all street bikes...

BTW, the Yamaha filter (uncommon construction) doesn't have a high pressure bypass valve

so when the oil's cold and viscous it still has to go thru the filtering media, which resembles sponge material.

So, you're saying I shouldn't use STP straight up out of the can.

What I want to know is, what is the best 20W/50 oil to use in a Gen I??

Dan,

You've opened a can of worms here on this site, and it was Dog pyle Friday to boot!

There are as many opinions to the best oil as there are arses here  ; nevertheless, IMHO I prefer Castrol Act Evo X-tra 4T 20W50 oil. Best price to pay is found HERE.

It's might be a couple dollars more (literally) than the leading brand, but this cheap ass frugal rider thinks it's worth it.

Rotella T Syn. is all I use in all my vehicles.

'nuff said!!!!

On second thought, maybe I should start buying oil that costs $12/quart like all the big companies want me to do, LOL!

I love Oil threads, it brings out the best in everyone. :)

**** the best 20W-50.
Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 Is the best!!

Just use the 15W40 Delo/Delvac/Rotella and worry about something else....LOL.
And the mouth of the lord hath spoken....

In the 2009 FJR Owner's Manual 20w-50 is included as a recommended engine oil. The range of ambient temperatures where this oil is OK is 50 DegF - 120 DegF.

Also recommended is 10w-40. The range of ambient temperatures where this oil is OK is 10 DegF - 110 DegF.

So you wouldn't want to use 20w-50 when it's very cool outside.
