In the 2009 FJR Owner's Manual 20w-50 is included as a recommended engine oil. The range of ambient temperatures where this oil is OK is 50 DegF - 120 DegF.
Also recommended is 10w-40. The range of ambient temperatures where this oil is OK is 10 DegF - 110 DegF.

So you wouldn't want to use 20w-50 when it's very cool outside.
Uh huh...

I hate t' be so cynical, but Yamaha used to call for 20W40 under all conditions when that was what the (re-branded) "Yamalube" oil was.

Now that Yamalube has changed their product weights to 10W40 and 20W50, suddenly, for the same exact engine (the 2009 is the same engine as prior years) that is the exact weights the manual calls for?

I just go with the Jestel recommendation.

And you wouldn't want to use a 20-50 during, say, a nuclear war, or in several billion years when the sun has expanded to 10 times it's present size. I believe jestal recommended a 100w-500 in those circumstances.

The FJR's engine coolant temp and concomitant oil temp will probably still maintain as always -- between thermostat close/open and cooling fan/s off/on (or not?).... :(

I was wondering if I could use 20w/50 oil in my gen 1.
Absolutely. Sure you can.

Of course you could also use #2 bunker oil in there.

I'm not saying it's a good idea though, just that you could...

Personally, I prefer to run with straight Slick 50. I mean, if 12 oz of that stuff is good enough to protect your engine for a jillion miles after it impregnates the surface of the metal, a gallon is bound to work even better, right?

Olive oil. If you're Italian.
