Kinda. It's really good that he threw in the TBS, because he is right. It's all out in the open then.

How many hours and at what labor rate did he come up with the $350? That would have been my question.

How you gonna get 'em off MizzBustanut????

WW,

Hey, I just had mine checked at 24k checkup and they said they were all within spec, but the thing that has me worried is that the engine makes a fair bit of noise while it's warming up and a very faint bit of noise after she's warm. I have been thinking of taking her back to show them but she's all warmed up by the time i get to the dealer. Any advice?

James

I had my 26K done at 25K and my mechanic said the vavles needed adjustment and so did the carbs. He wrote down how far each one was out for the next adjustment. I think the bike ran better after.
Cometman,

Glad you got your Carbs adjusted!!

Hahaha!!!

Whateva..   :dribble:

Majic,

A valve service check should not cost $600.... Maybe if they have to do a lot of shimming but that still sounds very high. Most 26k checks need no shimming and are within the spec range.

I will say that I am a obsessive maintenance type person so I will do mine (I have the YES warranty and all)... When I do mine.. I will not accept, "They were all within the spec range." I will have any of mine shimmed back (that are reaching out of the range). Now, this will be more expensive than a simple clearance check.

Food for thought:

I know a lot of very good honest mechanics and they all share the views of your dealer guy. A couple have even stated this to me, " If the Yamaha valve train is not noisey... Odds are 90 to 1 that they are still within the spec range."

Not saying that is the way to go about doing valve maintenance checks.. Just passing it along.

If I didn't have the YES warranty... And at 26K, my valves sounded like they always have.. I would skip it until 52k (or until they got noisey).

Gremlins.....

Them little bastards can be tricky.

Go to the dealer and hangout for a while. You know, eat some popcorn, drink their koolaid...

Let her cool down plenty. Then start it for a tech or service manager....

Noisy when cold and warming and not so much when warmed up could be cam chain noise. Try bumping your idle to 1100-1200rpm and see if the noise goes away, or diminishes greatly, when cold. Fairly typical of the FJR's underengineered cam chain tensioner.

Threads ALL OVER the forum about this same issue.

Hey, look! Theres one right HERE!

And an oldie but GOODIE.

Sounds like a possible cam chain tensioner. You should be able to re-create the noise for the mechanic in a warm engine by dropping your idle to about 900 -950 RPM.
