I see alot of windshield topics out there on the forum but i dont see anything from the passengers view

My wife says that with the stock windshield in the highest position and cruising at about 80 or so the wind

is hitting her in such a way that her helmet is choaking her hard.

Do these after market windshields fix the problem..

And if they do is it the hight or width or the change in back preasure that is fixing the problem

And yes i know there is an easier way to fix the problem but she gets upset when i toss her off.

Wait, if the person holding the handlebars were taller...hmmm

careful who tosses who... :p

Hideously ugly, but effective is a Laminar Lip. Using my stock Gen I windshield, the Lip pushes air up and completely over the top of my pillion’s head. She still has issues with wind around her arms but she loves the quiet air pocket from the Lip. I’m 6.0’ and she is 5.5’. When I put the Lip on my ahamaY windshield it causes the taller and wider windshield to buffet. The buffeting doesn’t reach my pillion but the fluttering windshield in my line of sight drives me nuts, especially at night. The Lip is attached by means of gorilla style Velcro buttons and can be removed and moved (with a lot of effort). You can see the three right side Velcro attachment dots in this picture (ignore the speedo; picture by Fearless Pillion™), the Lip was removed for this ride:

The Laminar Lip is an inverted airfoil that works like an upside down wing to accelerate the air over the rider and create a quiet air pocket. It works very well. It is important to install the Lip per instructions to allow air to flow under the lip. If used solely on the stock Gen I windshield I would rate it 4.5 out of 5. When mounted on the over size ahamaY windshield I would rate it 3 out of 5 due to buffeting.

Another vote for the Laminar Lip, you can play with the adjustment until you get it right. I am very happy with mine but it is not the most visually attractive piece.

. . .not the most visually attractive piece.
But with the speedo pointing straight up, who's gonna have time to notice?

My windshield has an up-curve built in at the top. I have no idea what part this is, it was on the bike when I bought it.

Maybe someone can enlighten us as to what windshield this is. (Click for biggie pic.)

I like it, my brother hates it when he's riding the bike. I can't get anything out of Jan as to how she feels; her answer to any position (of the windshield) is "It's OK. . ."

I've got the Laminar Lip on my stock Gen II windshield. I've also got one on my Harley and it works wonders on both bikes. On the FJR, it lifts the air flow over my head and gives me a nice quiet pocket while allowing me to see over the windshield. It also lifts it high enough to shield my passenger as well. It is ugly, but I bought my bikes to ride, not to look at.

It looks lie a V-Stream from National Cycle $180

Let me ask one of my, "I just gots to know" questions with a short introduction While I do have a pilot's license, I am not an aeronautical engineer BUT - the cause of downpressure / backpressure is that the windscreen acts much like a wing. It produces a low pressure area behind the screen (somewhat mitigated by allowing air under the front of the windscreen) and high pressure in front. Nature likes equilibrium - hence the pressure you feel is from air rushing in to fill in, or equalize, the low pressure area behind the screen. Proof of the pudding (or practical proof) for me is that in heavy rains, I put the windscreen full up and that causes air to rush in almost vertically from above my grape protector pushing the rain straight down off of my faceshield - and directly onto my crouch, a questionable benefit.

My question, what are we in effect "doing" with the "flip" windscreens? Are we attempting to push the "low pressure" area to a point behind us so we aren't affected by the equilibrium effect -- well, I guess so. Never mind.

Let me ask one of my, "I just gots to know" questions.....
My opinion with the Cee baily flip (I had one) was that it made buffeting worse. I greatly prefer my Rifle sport with tuning block. The addition of the tuning block is what seemed to make the biggest difference in reference to buffeting. YMMV

Well, so it's a CeeBailey. Now I knows.

For myself, there's a magic position that's pretty nice. Higher and it throws my head forward, lower and it's not a shield at all.

In the rain, I've seen droplets float behind the screen, above the gas tank. Pretty cool.

But for the topic, I have no idea how it sets with the pillion, she says says everything's fine. She just likes to ride, I guess.

i was kind of wondering if i could get by with getting a taller shield.. maybe with a flip

or if i had to go wider at the same time...

if i just went to a taller shield and changed the airflow up higher it might be able to come around the sides and cause the same problems

I am going to the eurika ride in april and maybe there will be a couple of bikes with the named shields there...

IM hoping that if i dont make too much of an *** of myself they might trade bikes for a couple miles just to test the airflow.. but i guess we will have to wait and see... weather conditions, road conditions, and hardware on hand..

I do have the little laminar shield that i can put on the bike for the ride down...

Ugly shield is better than irate pillion.

My wife can't tell which windshield I have on, she can't tell if they are up or down but she sure knows then the Laminar Lip is on.

Barb -- nice avatar!

Vandy, there was a scratched aftermarket shield floating around for people to try. Not sure who has it now. Think Scab started the loan program.

I had looked at that windshield once befor but i checked again just to be sure... the closest ones seem to be around 1k miles from me..

I guess im just out of luck with that one..

I see west coast.. canada... east coast.. and up around ohio area..but it is a great idea

Vandy, I have the Yammie Touring Shield. I have found that it works great for me and my better half as well. The only thing that she complained about was the seat and I hope I've fixed that with a new Russell. If I remember correctly, the YTS is 4" taller without a flip, and 1" wider than stock. It follows the same contour as the stock shield which I like alot. I had a CAL-SCI shield and used it for one season. It was okay, but for me, I like the Yamaha one better. The best thing is that you can get the YTS for less than 100 bucks to your door.

I'm 6'-3" and the wife is around 5'-4", I think. Hope this helps.
