I think the '87 had a 16" front wheel. If nothing else this will leave you at the mercy of Bridgestone for tires. Unless you're just really sold on the looks I'd go newer. Just a couple of bumps newer ('96!) and you're at the CBR1100XX, too, which I don't think I've ever read a bad word about. :)

A friend has a late ('91 or '92) 1000F and we've been through some nice twisties. Though I've never ridden it, it seemed similar to riding with FJRs in that I kept up through corner speed and tended to lose out on corner exits while on my spindly little FZR-600. Given they're both big, comfy rockets I think the differences would be more fairings and chains in everyday life.

Given that I don't know your true motivation, I'll guess at a few possibilities.

"I want a 1987 Hurricane because it's a freaking gorgeous bike [and/or some other irrational base want]." Well, buy the damn thing!

"I want a classic, comfortable rocket that I'm not going to lose in the parking lot at CROT next to five others that have the same freaking paint scheme." '97 YZF-1000 Thunderace or '90-92 CBR-1000F.

"I want a great-handling missile to put serious miles on." Oh, look, there was an FJR right here the whole time! :)

I have been thinking about a 87 Honda 1000 hurricane how would this compair to my FJR in the handling.
While it's possible to quantify many motorcycle's attributes (physical) and deficiancies (many magazines attempt this with comparison tests); quantifying something as personal/individual as "Handling" can get alot more difficult. Do you generally like the way bikes with 16" front wheel's handle, for instance? Then there's the issue of twenty years of on-going technology and ideas separating the two....

But, in a very general way -- they're both big, heavy, in-line four Japanese sport-tourers with 100hp (or more). In that regard they'll probably be more similar than different?

I had one of these but mine looked pretty bad, by the time I got it most of the plastic was gone and it had lots of abuse and more quarter mile runs on it than Pam Anderson in all the copies of that Borat Movie. Despite this abuse the engine still ran perfect, what is it with that Honda outfit? It handled very well and wanted to fall into corners with a bit too much verve, took effort to keep it going straight, shifted like a hot rod with loud kathunks between the gears, took all your skills to even give the impression of being smooth, gave me continous wedgies and shoved me into that large hump tank, made me bend at the knees and lean forward way too much. It was not as settled as the FJR in the corners but the stock rear shock did a pretty good job of making short jumps in between traction. The bike simply refused to go slow, you could force it sane only with a firm hand but if you didn't break the ton on each ride it would call you a pussy when you pushed it into the garage. I think it made similar HP to our FJR's but it was very peaky and with that chain I think more got to the back wheel.

Really great fun but not a commuter, I gave it up for the sanity of a Bandit 1200 and may be alive, or still have a drivers chit, today because of it.
