Scott has been practicing that prone position all over the world.
He has literally done it all over the world... Machu Picchiu, Great Wall of China, Mexico, Canada, India, Vietnam... he's a prone kinda guy...

Great trip report Tyler, one small typo, when you left Sumpter you back tracked on Hiway 7 to Hiway 245, also known as the Dooley Mountain Hyway. It's one of the favorites in the area for the Sport Bike crowd.
Ah thank you for that correction... got all those numbers jumbled up that day... I was surprised I followed the route correctly!! :D

"I think my traveling comrades were ready for me to put the camera away right about now..."

Don't even think about it...... one thing I've learned is, take as many pics as you can at those special moments in time (and only you know when that is) because you never know when you'll ever get back that way again.

Your photos are encouraging for folks to get out there and travel to places one has never been before.

So thank you for your patience to take the time to take that shot......

Well said, I get out a bit but not as much as I like. Ride reports help a guy plan the next ride.

Tyler, you quit taking pictures and we'll all give you a little stink eye.

We had lunch there today on our way back from Montana. They were out of elk, but the buffalo tacos were very good.

+1

MORE PLEASE!!!!

Thus far, the "Unity Picture" is my favorite because of the back story. If I may ask, is this why you ride 3-wheelers now? Where you riding an FJR when the accident occured?

Tyler - if this doesn't sound too creepy, I hope one day we can ride together.

Oh not the stink eye!! And thank you for the support... everyone loves the pictures once we are back and I get them posted... and the majority of the time everyone is fine with knowing I'll be lagging because of it... but everyone once in awhile they get a little impatient... but it passes and we do it again. And sometimes I just tell everyone to go and do their thing and I'll do mine and I'll see them at the end... taking the photos is a way for me to share the world with others such as yourselves... I enjoy it immensely and I'm very glad you enjoy it too! B)

Yes, that is the reason I'm on the Spyder... I missed being out in the world and traveling with my friends but 2-wheels wasn't an option so the Spyder was the next best thing. I had so much damage to my legs that it's a miracle I'm walking around and even a small gash takes a couple of weeks to heal. There were a lot of people who worked really hard to make sure I stayed around and I just don't feel like I can take the risk of 2-wheels for their sake... and my own as well. I miss "The Dance" greatly but it is what it is. ;)

I was riding an FZ1 (it was a Yamaha and it was blue so it was close! ). I have never owned an FJR but joined this fine forum when one of the members that I knew from another forum (Andrew/OrangevaleFJR) passed away and we were directed here for memorial info, etc. I was welcomed into the fold and have met some of the most wonderful friends here... and I also received a huge amount of support after my accident from this place... it holds a special place in my heart.

And no, it doesn't sound creepy at all... I am hoping to get out your way next year so let's see if we can make that happen. B)

Yep, Marissa had the gyro and really liked it too.

Okay, let's finish this sucker up!! lol

We arrived at the Fish House Inn in Dayville, OR to find Carrie/shutterbug awaiting our arrival. She had ridden up to meet us and would join us for the rest of the trip. Also, picked up another wayward traveler, Danny, who decided to meet us there as well. We had reserved the main house which comfortably fit all of us (Danny had the upstairs room) plus we had a full kitchen so home cooking it would be!

i-wJvvXqf-XL.jpg

After being on the bike for 11 straight days, I was ready for a "down" day off the bike as was Carrie. The others decided to do a shortish local ride so while they were out and about, Carrie and I headed to the cafe down the street for a scrumptious breakfast complete with home made biscuits and strawberry jam... YUM!
i-QnBqtDT-XL.jpg

And then we wandered about town and entertained our photo bugs...
i-vctkcjV-XL.jpg

Next to the Mercantile, there was a row of playhouses from the old West... pretty clever...
i-zzRTSnP-XL.jpg

i-kRzRTJ8-XL.jpg

I think those curtains have been there since the wild, wild west...
i-9Sr2zRw-XL.jpg

There was a little issue with Carrie but I managed to bail her out... it's always the quiet ones you gotta watch out for...
i-wRLqJjB-XL.jpg

We checked out a few of the homes nearby and the flora surrounding them...
i-VF5Dvtd-XL.jpg

i-JZQWHFd-XL.jpg

i-GR8LLBH-XL.jpg

This place was kinda creepy... like the local haunted house that your buddies would dare you to go and play doorbell ditch but you didn't because you were afraid you'd get dragged in by some evil spirit or something!
i-3Q97xdp-XL.jpg

i-pQW4sKT-XL.jpg

The place was completely surrounded by prickly thistle bushes which were pretty to look at but you definitely didn't want to get in the thick of...
i-H4b3Gc4-XL.jpg

Busy bee...
i-zB23Ndn-XL.jpg

Three generations of fire trucks...
i-4QDWqWt-XL.jpg

Popped in next door to the gas station mini mart for some water... not much of this sort of stuff in California at the local 7-11!

i-4ZTrp5p-XL.jpg

And then it was time for a rousing match of horseshoes... Stevie was a shoe-in... so to speak...
i-h8JhqL9-XL.jpg

i-cCXsTsG-XL.jpg

Carrie in motion...
i-FhpKZz2-XL.jpg

Scott tried his hand at it...
i-ZGvpCPr-XL.jpg

Hmmmm....
i-5HkDXwW-XL.jpg

Sue sent us scattering for cover... oops!!
i-j5QRshv-XL.jpg

"Give me the horseshoe, dear... gently..."
i-Whq4nWx-XL.jpg

Enough of that... time for a break...
i-2qkg8Ns-XL.jpg

Have I mentioned my friends are a bit smart-assed... :p
i-BBLJTXp-XL.jpg

We all gathered again for a great home cooked meal together...
i-szKL9wL-XL.jpg

Danny was enjoying it so much he stayed another day... gotta love a man that does dishes... BUSTED! :D
i-tjjGFRG-XL.jpg

Another good night's rest and we packed up and headed out for LaPine, OR... it was a beautiful morning back along 26 through the John Day area again...
i-xR2Wzmp-XL.jpg

i-54GrPp8-XL.jpg

i-CJqq3kg-XL.jpg

I love this section that winds its way through the towering rock formations...
i-snZr8Bj-XL.jpg

i-ttFXZL2-XL.jpg

i-LcLxK2w-XL.jpg

i-VSfj5gC-XL.jpg

Glimpses of Three Sisters Mountains along the way...
i-DWwZLF8-XL.jpg

i-skrRNF5-XL.jpg

Stopped in Redmond (I think?) for breakfast... just a reminder...
i-rPNNXQp-XL.jpg

Then continuing on to 242/McKenzie - Santiam Pass which is an AMAZING road and I would highly recommend it for any moto travelers that find themselves up that way...
i-7CMXgPR-XL.jpg

First you travel past through the lava beds that stretch for miles...
i-J3pkTdH-XL.jpg

i-gfNnW86-XL.jpg

i-XWRp36h-XL.jpg

A lava castle...
i-jf3Zxwm-XL.jpg

Stevie & Patrick...
i-KwKj52g-XL.jpg

Danny and his gorgeous Triumph...
i-LcVbnkh-XL.jpg

Carrie just chillin'...
i-nznM6G7-XL.jpg

And then came the roller coaster section which was a blast... such a blast that I only stopped once to get a photo... it was like this for miles and very little traffic so we all took the gift that was given and road appropriately...
i-2hzRL4z-XL.jpg

When we reached 126, Danny went right and we went left to take NF-19 (look for Aufderheide Drive off of 126)... I had called my local contact to inquire into road status and he said, yeah, it's all paved and you should go for it... so we did!

Cougar Reservoir where we stopped to break out those cooling vests again... did I mention they were well worth every penny??
smile.png

i-BnprTFP-XL.jpg

I headed out ahead of the group to find a suitable place to lay in wait and get some action shots of them riding by... Sue, Patrick & Stevie first...
i-w8KSgrj-XL.jpg

Scott...
i-SJWKVG8-XL.jpg

Carrie...
i-kzLr7T5-XL.jpg

NF-19 is a beautiful forest road winding its way through the forests and opening up occasionally for some stunning river views...
i-NKrPdjT-XL.jpg

i-9x9gwbS-XL.jpg

i-ddJCNks-XL.jpg

i-cH5nT5t-XL.jpg

i-cmdxNdX-XL.jpg

The road is about 50 miles long and would connect us to 58 and then it would be a short hop into LaPine... or so we thought... about 42 miles in, I rolled up to find everyone pulled over on the side of the road... I asked what was up... they all pointed to the sign just up the road...
i-vTXps6C-XL.jpg

Really?!? We didn't believe it so sent Patrick and Scott, who had the larger gas tanks, up ahead to check if it was really closed or if our bikes might be able to squeak through... unfortunately, it was really closed so we had to turn back which on the one hand was good because it was a fantastic road but on the other hand would set us back on time and add a good amount to mileage... luckily, everyone was good for gas so we had no worries about running out along the way back...

So our 250-mile day unexpectedly turned into about 400 miles but at least there was some beautiful scenery and roads to keep us occupied...

We arrived at FJRay's house in LaPine a few hours later than planned but he and his lovely bride, Patti, and daughter Sherlie were all ready for us and cooked up a wonderful bbq dinner... relaxing before dinner and swapping tall tales...

The grill master...
i-rQ4T55W-XL.jpg

The cleaning crew for any dropped food...
i-tGVRJPK-XL.jpg

i-2XK77Mv-XL.jpg

And the baaaaaaaaaad boys keeping watch...
i-mZxRQvB-XL.jpg

We set up camp on air beds and futons for the night, comfortably wedged in together for the night... the next morning, Scott "helped" deflate one of the beds...
i-QcbjVHW-XL.jpg

Coming soon... the final two days... already?!?

The morning was cool so we bundled up as we headed out, bidding our wonderful hosts adieu until we would seen them again in September... Ray gave us an alternate back route along 42 then 46 out to 58... we had the world to ourselves this morning...
i-c4dxR4B-XL.jpg

i-h6FNGF3-XL.jpg

Once out on 97, we stopped for breakfast in Chemult... not sure if it was the best food but it was pretty good for hungry travelers...
i-JZGx3X2-XL.jpg

138 - one of the longest stretches of straight road we would see on this trip...
i-pPkkLR5-XL.jpg

We started to see signs of some of the smoke from the myriad of wildfires that were burning in multiple states... luckily it never got too bad...
i-xLjLFJb-XL.jpg

Then over 199/Grants Pass which was laden with traffic and we couldn't seem to get a break... one of those frustrating days... I finally pulled over at one point to just take a break from the Prius' and motor homes that refused to use the turnouts... put on your big girl panties and deal with it... so I took a deep breath and continued on...

Are we there yet??
i-Pqh4m5t-XL.jpg

Nope... not quite there yet...
i-fx83pqN-XL.jpg

As we got closer to the coast, we found ourselves... cold!! It was a welcome change in temperature after several back-to-back days of 90+ degree days... I relished in my goose bumps... hello ocean!! We've missed you!!
i-TVpD4Lt-XL.jpg

Our end destination for the day was Eureka where we would meet up with more friends - Geoff, Bugnatr/Doug, Gayle, and George again - to share a nice dinner together... we stayed at the Best Western which had a free limo service and we took full advantage of that service...
i-Tvsnksn-XL.jpg

Many thanks to FarWestFastEddie for the restaurant recommendation... wish you coulda stayed longer! :)
i-WD8SpxQ-XL.jpg

Geoff right before he tried his ill-fated magic trick involving a fully set table and a tablecloth... can you say broken glasses?
i-FMNN85G-XL.jpg

Things got a little crazy on the way back...
i-FnTXmLd-XL.jpg

Sue pouring a nightcap... I know it looks bad but it's just chardonnay wine... lol
i-zBtkXKQ-XL.jpg

We chit chatted and laughed a lot... we seem to do that often on these trips... the kind of "you had to be there" moments that if I tried to explain you'd just stare blankly at whoever was telling the story... like this...

Anyway, off to bed on our last night before we would head home... why does it go by so quickly? Seems like we just started out and it's already time to head home?? But wait!! We have one more day... it started out like this...
i-8xFtrgR-XL.jpg

But got fixed like this...duct tape and zip ties will fix pretty much anything...
i-kjRSmP5-XL.jpg

And then we were greeted with a bit of this to start out with...
i-Chqgr9T-XL.jpg

Which quickly abated and we rolled along the Avenue of the Giants... one of my favorites...
i-xDLNdp2-XL.jpg

i-SjC6frn-XL.jpg

We stopped at the junction of 101 and 1 for a bio break... the local gas station owner refused to let us use the facilities (he's was a bit of a jacka$$ about it) so, since the matter was now urgent, we decided to fork out $3 and visit the drive thru tree... while no one really had it on their list to go, they all surprisingly enjoyed it... there's a really pretty meadow laden with wildflowers next to a pond...
i-VQX89Zp-XL.jpg

I walked closer to the pond and saw a bunch of bumps in the water which I thought was some sort of foliage... as I got closer I heard the croaking and realized they were froggies... tons of them croaking away in the morning sun...
i-zjP6w5C-XL.jpg

And dragonflies flitted about... they always look like a magical type creatue to me... brilliant colors and gossamer wings...
i-tmTxdLL-XL.jpg

And then the rockin' section of Hwy 1... that really fantastic section between Leggett and Fort Bragg... oh darn! No photos other than looking back at the end of it as you break out along the coast again...
i-MhV2zPh-XL.jpg

Someone mentioned a great place for lunch in Point Arena with a great view so we headed south on Hwy. 1...
i-VFrkZkb-XL.jpg

i-XvbjkcM-XL.jpg

I couldn't figure out where you had a view of the ocean in Point Arena but if you turn right on Iverson Ave. at the south end of town, follow onto Port Rd., it will take you right out to Arena Cove and Pier Chowder House & Tap Room with, yep, you guessed it... stellar views of the coast!

Working boats get no breaks on the weekend...

Townfolks with a sense of humor...
i-RvRxmNk-XL.jpg

And then the time had come... it was time to head for home... I was sad for the trip to end but was looking forward to sleeping in my own bed... we traversed the Marin backroads and then I naively thought that I could hop on 80 to 880 since usually the worst traffic was on Sunday around there... WRONG!! It took me an hour to go two miles (and unfortunately the only downfall of riding the Spyder is no lane splitting)... just as I was ready to hop off the freeway and find some surface streets, the pace magically picked up and was clear sailing the rest of the way.

I forgot to share this poem that was posted at the viewpoint on the Cascade Hwy... I think we all have times in our lives when we feel like a mountain... solitary, the world on your shoulders, a bit beaten up... but I hope you each hear the "Well done." :)
i-sJJgngB-XL.jpg

Recap - two weeks, amazing roads, incredible scenery, new stories to tell, memories that will stay etched upon my mind, gratitude for being alive and being able to experience it all, and the cherry on top... a myriad of wonderful friends to share the laughter, tears, (s)miles with... blessed? You betcha!!

Thanks for taking the trouble to take the photos and post it all...no small task Ms Risk.
