I really miss the unused mirror hole on a standard clutch perch to install a RAM ball for my GPS. So I looked around the bar and found the little pressed sheet metal cable keeper. Hmmmm, let's give that a whirl.
Started shaping and drilling a piece of 2" wide aluminum stock that I have left over from another project. I think it's 1/4 in. thick. Three of the edges are square, and the edge that runs along the keeeper has been ground concave to match the curve of the keeper. I just put it in a drill press vise and slowly worked at it with a 1" drum sander.
I need to get a better bolt for the RAM ball to bracket connection for cosmetic reasons, but it's solid as a rock for the moment.
Keen observers may note that I've also added a small piece of closed cell foam on the RAM bracket behind the power port of the Nuvi 500 to keep that sucker from rattling loose.
