Been having some issues with my home PC the last couple of weeks. It's been gradually running slower and slower when running processer-intensive applications, like rendering video, which I do a lot.

It's gotten SO bad the past several days I was actually investigating gutting my server case and upgrading to a new QuadCore, 64-bit OS, 8 gigs of ram, SATA drives, the whole works.

But before dropping a coupla grand into a new box, I thought I'd take a look around to see if my problem was hardware- or software related.

First, a prologue....I am a cat owner. Love the little beasts. Prefer 'em over dogs. It's just a personal thing. I've owned dogs...I've owned cats. Just like cats better.

The picture in my avatar is my most recent acquisition....Leo, aka "CoonCat". She's a 6 month old beauty who has become my best friend and companion. Missus Howie is jealous. :)

Here's another picture of this little heartbreaker --

Well CoonCat LOVES to hang out with me, and as I spend 4-6 hours nightly at my computer desk, she's usually right there, sleeping in my lap, or more often, racked out on the floor right in front of my PC tower. I guess she likes the warm air coming out of the exhaust fan.

Back to the PC issue -- after running a multitude of hardward and software tests, I couldn't nail down a specific problem, so I thought I'd shut it down and check that all the memory sticks were seated well, CPU was firm in its socket...y'know, all the "hands on" stuff you can check before tossing components.

When I grabbed the heatsink to make sure it was attached firmly, guessing that an overheating CPU might be the problem, I actually burned my fingers on the heatsink fins. ??? I know they get hot, but DAYUM!!

Restarted the PC, went in to the BIOS and checked the hardware/power settings on my BIOS. The BIOS hardware monitor was reporting a CPU temperature of 150 degrees!!! I couldn't remember what a typical overheat temp was, but no WONDER I burned my fingers! Also, my BIOS has a "throttleback" setting, that automatically reduces CPU cycles if an overlimit temperature conditions exists. Well, the BIOS "throttleback" was set to 25% at 140 degrees. So since my CPU was WELL over 140, the BIOS had reduced the processer power by 75%. No WONDER my PC was running like an old 386!

Took a closer look at the CPU cooler and it looked a bit dirty. Hard to see, though, since the fan and hold-down housing obscured most of the heatsink from visual inspection.

Decided to pull the entire assembly off for a thorough cleaning and look what I found after removing the fan, shroud and housing --

(children should be instructed to leave the room NOW!)

HOLY CRAP!!!

What looks like a big felt washer is an accumulation of cat hair sucked in to the PC box, sucked through the CPU cooler and packed in tight underneath the CPU fan! Kinda like those pictures on the forum of mice nests in Feejer airboxes. In fact, the above picture LOOKS like a squashed mouse!

Pic #2 of the "wad" is just so you can get a little perspective on the size of the wad of hair. Gaaacccckkkk!

Cleaned everything out, washed the cooler, reinstalled everything nice and tight, fired the PC back up and after letting it run for an hour and checking, the CPU temperature was 95 degrees. A full 55 degree drop! And it's running like a 3.8Ghz P4 SHOULD run....nice and zippy-zoomie!

Lessson learned? If you own cats, check your CPU cooler on your PC, especially if it starts running poorly.

:) :) :) :) :) :)

Ya know I knew you was into some kinky sex ****, but a fur lined ring???

I dunno Howie.... yer startin to concern me

Good advice though. I've been having a few issues here and the cat does like this room..

Guess I'd better "bust" this thing open an see if I can score one of them sex aids.

:jester:

LOL :)
BTW: Real men water cool their PC's :)
You can take your urination fetish to another thread RIGHT NOW!!! :angry2: :angry2: :angry2:

(but seriously, I did watercool my last PC, a blazingly hot AMD, but it cooled TOO well....cooled the CPU to the point that in the warm, humid environment inside the PC, condensation formed around the edges of the CPU and rusted out the socket. And no, it wasn't a leak...it was condensation! :shok: )

It ain't just cats. Dogs release fibrous crap into the environment, too. Have a look at the coils under your fridge. Don't report back.

Wow, sounds as if you averted a real cat-tastrophy... :p

Way to troubleshoot!

You followin' me everywhere???

Damn, you ARE a cyberstalker!

 That's good.. really, really good.

Did you notice other signs of hair intrusion around the case cooling fans, hard drives, etc? I gotta admit, I've never seen that much crap on heat sinks before.. Say, just how clean is your house? Just sayin'....

How clean is my house? Well, not counting the cat-hair dust bunnies under the furniture, prettty clean. :)

But seriously, I clean my PC thoroughly about every 6 months, using vac and canned "air". Yeah, I clean out a lot of dust and hair, but what happened in this case is that the top of the heat sink is completely hidden by the fan, fan shroud and mounting bracket. If you look at the fins of the heat sink on the sides, you see they're fairly clean, especially when viewed in context with the TOP of the heatsink.

What happend is that the CPU fan would pick up a stray hair here, another one there, over and over, and finally created the "felt washer" you see in the top picture. But the wad 'o' hair is completely obscured by the fan and shroud, as well as being trapped there BY the fan and shroud, so judicious cleaning of the 4 sides of the heatsink was performed "in situ" , but unfortunately it didn't...and couldn't...make any impact on the hair hidden under and trapped by the fan shroud.

It finally got to the point the fan became completely ineffective on moving air through the cooling fins because the passage was completely blocked.

The "donut" of crap exactly outlines the area swept by the fan blades. The donut "hole" is the center of the fan (the motor portion) so that's why there's no crap there.

There's really two reasons I never cleaned the actual "intake" portion of the assembly --

1) An assumption had been made that a thorough "blasting" of the sides of the heatsink had done the job, and

2) The particular design of the entire cooler mechanism consists of 8 different flimsy plastic bracket clips that will snap just thinking about 'em (don't ask :angry2: )

Plus, to be competely forthright, this is the first time I've removed the entire heatsink assembly in this PC's 4 or so years of existence, so the "donut" is probably 4 years of accrued smegma.

Bad assumption that regular cleaning had removed all traces of accumulated poop.

That was the thrust my my initial post....don't ignore the top of the heatsink DIRECTLY BENEATH THE CPU FAN!!! The hardest part to get to, but the area MOST likely to get the dirtiest.

I LOVE that word! Good explanation too, Thank you. I have to admit, my home built box has been online essentially 24x7 since 2005 and I've not checked under the cpu hood... Then again, current cpu temp is only 82F... LOL.

82F???? Hell, mines THAT hot before I turn the damn thing on!

Whatchew runnin'....some weak-sauce Celeron or sumpin'? (or an old 286?)

Guess that's why some prefer their ******* bald

Dude, I love cats. I mean, next to motorcycles, they're my favorite things...but THOSE look just like they would JUST before you popped 'em in the oven surrounded by potatos and carrots.
