Mine had one of those plastic legs broken, and the heat sink lifted one corner up off the CPU. ANY CPU % at all would trigger the heat sensor, which would crank up the variable-speed case fan, and the wife would ask me to stop the computer and vacuum the living room so she could hear the TV. Just loading a busy web page would do it, forget playing Portal!

I used a couple of those twist ties that come on router power cords and tied the broken corner down. CPU temp's where it oughta be, system's good as new.

Gawd, that's a mess...

The outside of my ole HP media center looks like a bad dream of dust, so I hate to think what the inside looks like. I have 4 dogs and a cat living here, so, look out when I open up that thing. Let's see, where my poison paint respirator... ???

Funny you mentioned the variable speed fan. My case fan is constant, but the CPU fan IS variable and was running full-tilt ALL the time. And since it was "pushing" against the clog, rather than moving air through the fins, the fan was simply WAILING away. Missus Howie called my PC "The Sawmill" for it's resemblance to the sound of a Snidely Whiplash-style industrial crosscut saw. I guess I'd gotten used to it and didn't make the connection until the system started bogging down so badly.

Not surpisingly, now that the CPU's getting decent airflow, the fan stays at low speed and is completely inaudible with the case buttotned up.

Trust me...when I hear that sucker start screaming like an F-16 at take-off again, I'll be de-clogging it again. :)

Guess that's why some prefer their ******* bald
My boss has one of those: 'Bip'

He's actually a pretty cool cat as far as cats go.

Cat, by Steven King

I used to run a brush through my heatsink every year to clean out the dust. The silver paste stuff is exceedingly cheap if you buy in bulk.

I also have kitties-and so have filtered all the inlets for my comps. Where a ready made fan filter isn't available, I've found that taping ScotchBrite pads over the inlet works beautifully.

Wow...that's a BRILLIANT idea!

Cheap and effective.

my home built box has been online essentially 24x7 since 2005 and I've not checked under the cpu hood... Then again, current cpu temp is only 82F... LOL.
82F???? Hell, mines THAT hot before I turn the damn thing on!

Whatchew runnin'....some weak-sauce Celeron or sumpin'? (or an old 286?)

Tell me ol' computer wienies... Do ya use an Anal thermometer to check the Temperature??

Geeks

i thought you were the one who was still running a 4-year-old pc. i bet you ride a vesap with fjr decals on it so you can post to the forums. :D

i came home from KC a week ago, turned on my PC and the overhead light in the office went out... tripped a breaker. long story short, something fried my power supply, motherboard, and CPU while i was out of town. ended up getting a 1000watt power supply, a Core 2 Quad with 12Mb of internal cache (3.x ghz), and a motherboard to match. moved my salvaged 4Gb of corsair ram and existing drives over. they had a sale on video cards, so picked up an nVidia 9500Gt while i was at it.

while researching my old stuff, i saw where the current 250gb hdd was bought around 2003, so found a 1 Tb WD caviar black SATA hdd on sale (new egg) for under 120.00 including tax and shipping. am bringing up all my software on the new hdd but had all the data migrated.

the new system reads e-mail like a mofo!

Holy cat hair Batman!

I have been a paid computer geek for over 16 years and have never seen such a mess inside a pc.

This was a good tip for me as I have clients with fuzzy friends.

Just to emphasize here...the mess was between the fan and top of the heatsink....completely obscured.

The rest of the inside of the box was clean.

You could conceivably clean a PC thoroughly and miss it if you didn't pop the fan off.
