I recently picked up a Acer One netbook to use while on the road doing trips. I took it to Ohio this weekend, which is the first time I have taken it any distance on the bike, and when I got to the hotel the computer would start up, get to my desktop, and then shut off. The computer NEVER stayed on longer than 40-60 seconds, so I couldn't even try to see what is wrong with it. I even went into bios, and the computer still shut down in less than 1 minute.

Anyone have any ideas what might have happened, or what I can try to fix the problem?

Oh, running XP, and had ZERO problems before this happend.

Sounds like it had lost the charge on the battery

Does the same thing plugged in or not. During the few seconds it runs, the battery indicator reads 100%.

All of the power items seem to be fine. Light comes on when plugged in. Seems to power up just fine plugged in or not.

Gets to desktop page, screen blinks once, and then it turns off.

There isn't anything plugged in that isn't hardwired, other than the upgrade of RAM I added. No flash drives, or memory stick or cards, or anything like that.

does it do the same thing if you remove the battery and just use the power adapter.

what it sounds like is it does not have enough power to stay running

I tried running the unit WITHOUT the battery but plugged in, and still had the same problem. I guess I will try calling Acer tomorrow.

Try removing and reinstalled the RAM you upgraded. I had the same problem with some cheap memory I bought for my Acer Notebook. Worked for awhile and then kaput. If not replace the memory with the memory you removed and see if it works again. Bad memory confirmed.

Might be a thermal shutdown. Temperature sensor goes high, shuts down to keep the smoke in. Maybe a fan not kicking in, or a heat sink detached; no way to see for sure without opening it up.

Yup, the fan is shot. Acer will repair it under warranty, but I have to pay to ship it to them, and they quoted me 3-4 week repair time. Seems pretty ****** service for a less than 2 month old computer in my opinion.
