Just perusing thru the manual and wondered if anyone has adjusted the balancers just to see if it helped smooth out the motor any. I know the factory usually just gets items like that just in the ball park and a little fine tuning does a lot. I find my engine to be pretty damn smooth, but just wondered.

You can adjust the timing of the balancers. I think Torch may have gotten around to playing with them without any improvement. Of course your milage may vary. It's one of those things that "gee, if I only had a spare angine on a stand I could play around with" kind of things. I have enough trouble making time to ride so the balancers will never get touched.

They're timed, like the cams. If they're in the wrong place, the motor gets harsh. Their purpose is to throw weight around to negate the imbalance of pistons and conrods throwing their weight around.

You're question is like asking if you could move the cams up or back a tooth or two.

Um. . . . . . . No.

As far as adjusting them, this is one of the smoothest, if not the smoothest large (for a bike) 4-cylinders there is.

The balancers on the old Connie were gear driver, too. But there was a lot of fiddling done with the lash adjustment (how tightly the gears were meshed) and this was said to improve handlebar buzz. I adjusted mine (on my connie) and didn't really feel any difference. Just another adjustment for obsessive compulsives to obsess over... ;)

They're gear driven... what exactly are you going to adjust?

On the '03, the balancers are on an eccentric shaft and can be adjusted. The shafts and brackets have marks that relate to each other. Adjustment is for clearance of the gears. If the balancer are timed correctly during installation, all your affecting is clearance (Noise) with maybe a slight improvement in buzz. There's a section that addresses them in the manual. I assume they're the same for all models.
