That's interesting, that the military specify actual breeds rather than aggressively behaved dogs. I suppose a firm, objective rule is easier to enforce than a subjective opinion about whether a dog is aggressive or not. Of my two dogs, the one with Rottie in him is probably the least aggressive. Both of the boys are pretty mellow but the pure Shepherd is probably the more intimidating.
The military will also ban you if your dog shows aggressive traits. I think listed are things like, "Running along a fence and barking aggressively when strangers are around", "biting", or things like that.
What I don't understand is that it only applies if you intend to live on base in on-base housing.

What I want to know is that if you want to apply for on-base housing, and each place has a vet, why can't your dog be assessed by the person taking your application for on-base housing and each dog be observed on a case by case basis rather than a piece of paper stating it's breed. I mean, it's laughable. Sorta like the 'pet' version of the Japanese internment camps or some sort of doggie Civil Rights movement is needed. "Sorry. Rottweilers have to play in the back of the dog park." lol. Sorry. Stuff like this confuses me sometimes.

Like all discrimination, random statements about large groups are rarely based in fact. I firmly believe that no particular breed of dog is innately aggressive. Any dog can be turned into a monster by a careless owner. Sadly, a larger dog becomes a more threatening monster than a 'cute' little chihuahua. Each generation has a dog breed that it is the fashion to criticize. The Pit Bull seems to be the bad guy right now, closely followed by the Rottweiler. Dobermans and Shepherds aren't QUITE so feared right now, but it may be their turn again soon.

Breed?

Why these are two very cute little Curbstone setters.

Named that fer settin' on any curbstone they want.

For any who were still curious, we brought the dogs to PetSmart today to hang out for a bit. The trainer took a look at the puppy and said, "Looks like a little bit of pit with maybe a shephard". And low and behold, when we picked him up from the foster family, they had also taken in a pit female who looks like she had just had a litter, and there was also a small shephard mix (looks like a miniature german shephard) that was hanging around and plays with the puppies.

So we may have solved the heritage questions.... Still might do a doggie DNA test in the future. But whatever he is, he's super cute and super friendly and playful.
