A typical mod/farkle over in the ZRX forum is the removal of the air injection hardware cluttering up the top of the engine. Eliminates a few pounds of hardware and certainly cleans up work area around the plugs and valve covers.

Anyone removed the air injection system and blocked off the reed valves on a Feejer?

No, but can't imagine it would be real tough. Have to guard against exhaust leaks, as in a block off for where the reeds sit.

Been looking for reed valve cover block-off plates, similar to what are available for other models, but haven't found any yet.

Muzzy makes 'em for Suzis and Kawis...Ivan makes 'em, too, but haven't found any for the Feejer yet.

There's a LOT of undertank confusion can be cleaned up by removing this stuff.

Howie -

I used the Muzzy block-off plates on my ZRX....never even thought about doing the same on the FJR, probably because the top of the engine is hidden. On the ZRX, the mod saves some weight, makes maintenance easier and also looks really good.

Hmm, removing the same junk on the FJR, that's a damn fine idea! Please let me know if you find any block-off type plates for the FJR.

Don't know if this is relevant, but has anyone removed the AIR on a catalyzed bike? What would be the effect on the cat con if done? Would it matter? Do you care?

I'm wondering if the catalytic converter's catalyst might load up and become non-functional if oxygen was not injected into the exhaust stream. Not talking from any real knowledge here, just speculation. If I understand it correctly, the catalyst attains very high heat and in the presence of added oxygen, allows for some degree of post-combustion hydrocarbon burn-off... Or something like that. Would the conveter just perform at lower efficiencies without any problems (allowing the unburnt hydrocarbon exhaust stream to pass on through) or would it slowly 'coke-up', so to speak and create new issues?

I'll shut up now.

John.

1) Don't know...

2) Haven't a clue...

3) See #3

4) Not one damn bit. <_<

The air injection helps the cats light off when cold, and helps keep them lit at idle once warm. I really don't think the cats are much of a concern on many of these bikes though, and are pretty much history on quite a few.

I don't think it would make any more power. Might remove a little weight. Could change A/F ratio, O2 sensor readings. Added air in exhaust helps burn hydro-carbons, unburned fuel. Don't think it would harm Cat-converter. It gets gets very hot in exhaust stream. Combustion temps. 1600 degrees.

I removed air injection from my 94 Honda XR650L, to save weight. I also rejetted carb. at same time. Stopped popping on deceleration. Kit came with block off plates for exhaust. Single cylinder engine, very easy to work on.

Many V-Star riders do it...I know it is different because they have two carbs.

Maybe through them you can find a Yamaha source or an idea.

Maybe not.
