Afternnon, I am flying down to Pensacola to pickup my next FJR and want to know of any fun/good scenery roads to take up to Savannah, GA. Then from there I was looking at swining up to Deals Gap and back across Texas(Hill country?) to Denver. Any ideas would be great :yahoo:

Savannah is quite a detour to the Dragon...

I would suggest back roads From P'cola through GA, maybe hit a Braves game in Atlanta, then stay in Alpharetta at Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott for $64 through Orbitz. In the morning, continue up 400 and go 19 thru Dahlonega and pick up 60 on the north end. Take 60 to 325 (?) (Stock Hill, Swan) to Youngcane, Jones Creek to 129. Nice, nice roads and good warmup for the Dragon.

Here's another route out of Dahlonega...

Coastal Georgia is plenty scenic but you have to get right on the coast to see the scenic stuff (tidal marshes, barrier islands, shrimp boats etc.) And there are no roads worthy of mention from a motorcycling perspective between Pensacola and Savannah. Pick any back road on the map that heads in the right general direction and see some rural Georgia. Do not speed through small towns. If you want to avoid riding right through the putrified gut of Atlanta, lean to the east and head up through the gap between Augusta and Macon and generally head toward Athens. Honestly there are so many alternatives, just throw a dart at a map and do it. Most secondary roads in rural Georgia are in reasonably good shape due to mild winters but there aren't any real twisty routes till you get north of Gainesville.

But yeah, heading through Savannah adds about 350 miles to the trip from Pensacola to Deals Gap. If you want to see Savannah, go for it, that's just an easy day or a driven half day, but the ride up through Alabama is just as scenic, in its own way.

Unless those fires were put out this past weekend,I'd scratch savannah off the itinerary.

south ga. & north fla have been scorched by fires and we've been smoked out here around the atlanta area.

I rode down I-95 on Monday-Tuesday and there was no smoke. Going up I-75 about 10 days ago from Lake Park, FL to about 10 miles south of Valdosta, there was smoke.

The smoke is sort of hit and miss, depending on wind direction.

The area got extremely heavy rain this weekend from a tropical storm but there are still some fires burning.

As long as you head north out of Pensacola instead of due east across the panhandle, you should be mostly in the clear.

Is there a particular reason you want to go to Savannah?

Picking my new FJ up in Pensacola. 2 of my FJR buddies are ridding down from Denver to meet me and we are going to surprise my brother who is in the Navy and leaving for the Gulf for a year. He lives just north of Savannah and is based in Beaufort, SC. then we are going to Iron Butt it home! :D

I'm stationed in Beaufort as well. If you need anything while in town, let me know - I can pm you my cell #. I have access to a No-Mar tire changer, and have tools for basic maintance. More than happy to help out if I can.

Also, if you intend to ride on base, you will need a DOT Helmet, reflective vest, full fingered gloves, long pants & sleeves, & over the ankle footwear. These are the rules for DOD personnel, or anyone riding aboard a DOD installation.

Ride smart and be safe.
