Thought I'd share a first try at a cycle video with you. Not all that impressed with the "shake" in this piece, but I had fun making it as a first whack at something like this.

Used a Flip Ultra mini video camera (free from Adobe for speaking at a conference!) with a bigass $13 suction cup mount. (Too large in fact to be placed in all that many spots on the bike.) I'm thinking of giving this camera to my kids and getting the new Kodak Zi8, which has image stabilization apparently.

3:00 minutes, promising no dramatic cycling footage.* Check this out. Be nice. Let me know what you think.

Looks like fun Zip,

I had tried the Kodak a while back and was not impressed with its image stabilization performance and overall

video quality (it sucked). I quickly realized, what I already knew... You get what you pay for. Took it back to

the store. Bought a Cannon HD flash memory camcorder (Vixia HF S11) with true image stabilization and

jaw dropping HD.

Good luck with your choice,

WW

Thanks for the feedback, WW. That's a serious piece of kit, that Vixia! I'll be looking for your new video postings.

The shake is because of your mount. Check out the RAM mount options. They work great on my bike. Great flexible solution for under $50.

Check out the VholdR ContourHD 1080P camera. It is about $350, can record up to 4 hours video on a single charge, can use up to a 16 gig MicroSD card and has plenty of mounting options. I have recorded several rides with it but my 'puter is too slow to edit the files so I have not posted any. I will most likely upgrade it after Christmas and then post a few of vids.

Liked the video even with the shake...added realism to the ride. Agree that the shake is from the rubber flexing on the suction mount. Agree that a Ram or equivalent mount may eliminate most of the vibs. Good shot angles. Nice transitions. Get a more solid mount and try it again...look forward to your production.

great job on the editing. What are you using for NLE software?

wanna see more more, once you get out of town onto some actual bike roads!

Thanks, Braenan, Skid & Joe.

Downloaded the video to the Mac & used iMovie, which isn't bad for editing. At work, my folks are using Final Cut Studio or Adobe Premiere.

That was fun Barry - thanks. :)

Just a not eon image stabalization - judging by the video, and from my own experience using image stabalized photo gear and vidcams, I can say that some of the shaking will remain intact. Video stabilization isn't miracle technology. ;) It'll take care of most of what ail syou hear, but there would still be some cases where the lens simply moved too much for the technology to compensate. ;)

That said, I'm thinking of replacing my original Flip with the HD Kodak unit. :) Then I could do what you did and finally prove to the world I have no editing skills! :D

I think the combo of a sturdier mount and the image stabalization will be just what you want.

Looking forward to the next one.

PRETTY COOL. "What was that thing you were using with your left hand"?
Dude, don't make me jealous. Been sorta wishing I'd bought one without the left hand squeeze myself.

The Blue is more photogenic, though, one must admit.

And, guys, thanks for all the feedback! Highly encouraged to do some more of this, though much of it likely waits till spring.

(Especially as I'm about to ship my saddle away for a couple of weeks for enhancements!)

If you want to borrow a stock seat while yours is away, I've got a spare GenI stock seat that you can borrow. All it'd cost is shipping to you and back to me.

Let me know if you're interested.

Super cool of you, BG. Thanks very kindly.

It's going away just as it's starting to get pretty cold. I'd normally be riding to commute, but I'll live without the bike for a month or so.

Your response: just another reason I really enjoy this forum so much.

Okey-dokey. Let me know if you change your mind. That seat is just sitting around taking up space...

Very cool! Liked the shaking effect too. Also, the effect of fast forwarding was well done.

Thanks!
