Good for you Ray...... did it help ..... the smoke??
Yep, she's not smoking anymore! After soaking the rings, re-seating them, and checking the oil, it turned out that in my haste to re fire the engine I'd dumped to much oil in. I used 1 gal of oil in like I would have on the on the FJR. Never dawned on me to check the sight glass or that the oil quantity's would be different  I was about a quart overfull. Better to much than not enough eh? She not marking her territory like a Hardly any more either :dribble:

Ya know, I've got a spare set of hard luggage that just may fit that rig

The bike in the photo isn't mine. I actually have a 79 A1 model. It has 'Kraus'er Starlight bags.

Tribute to Rays ride only the bikes are different. A favorite piece. Keep up the good work Ray!.......

PM. <>< ;)

Looked like he was having fun on the beach B)

I think the trip he was taking was a trip into the next life tho

There ya go whetting my appetite again Don. The back box I have here is Krauser, and I believe the hard saddle bags are as well (They arn't marked)

Wow. I just realized I've been working on this project for 4 months, and I'm still not done! She's back in the yard with the tank off waiting for me to get to her to do another ColorTune and Carb Synch. I'm defiantly in the home stretch tho B)

I re tightened the exhaust yesterday and she quited down a bit, still may have to replace the exhaust gaskets. I'm hoping that I've run enough SeaFoam thru the system to clean out the itty bitty innards of the carbs. I'm on my 3rd tank of fuel :D The idle has calmed down to the point that everything is working consistently, so that's a real good sign that the carbs are spotless. The idle is doing a lot better, about 900 cold and creeping up to about 1100 when she's fully warm. That's a far cry from where she started. The roughness in the engine is consistent now as well at idle. I'll tell ya tho, she sure is smooth at 70 B) With the final tune I'll have a chance to check the plugs and smooth out the idle.

I still need to pick up a quart of kerosene to run in the oil to clean the motor internally. I noticed there was a dark, heavy film in the motor when I was in there. The kerosene will clean it all out without tearing the motor up.

I'm guessing it's time for another update since I'm still working on the XS.

I've replaced the rear springs with progressive 412's, and there working just fine. But I'll never buy from JC Whitney again! I can't remember if I posted here about it or not, but I ordered the shocks and springs and all that came in was the springs. Never seen springs with "Velocity sensitive valving" before. I wound up ordering the shocks separate and spending more than I intended in the first place. Live and learn.

After running the XS for a few weeks, commuting back and forth to work, and an occasional day ride, I've decided that the idle isn't quite what it should be even tho it's not that bad. Since I've been having trouble color tuning carbs 1 & 4, I figured it was time to pull the rack and clean the carbs yet again. I haven't been able to adjust the mixture for the idle circuit for carbs 1 or 4, so there's obviously a little varnish I missed on the first 3 attempts. Apparently the SeaFoam didn't get it either. So this time I've gotten serious! Meet my new 2.5 liter ultrasonic cleaner with heat!

Not quite big enough for an entire carb, but if I flip it over and re-run the clean a few times it works very well. Loaded up with all the goodies and some degreaser

The carb on the right was cleaned with Berrymanns B-12. The left one was cleaned and then I ran about 10 cycles in the ultrasonic cleaner.

*** UPDATE ***

I finally got thru all of the Ultrasonic cleaning of the carburetors! And it only took 5 days! I ran several cycles on each carburetor within a 24 hour cycle. The 5th day was a refurbishing the carburetor boots. I stripped off the RTV and cleaned the boots up real well. Then I sprayed several coats of Plasti Dip spray on the boots to fill the cracks and to protect the boots. I think the PlastiDip looks better than the RTV even tho both work the same. We'll see how it holds up over time. I installed the carburetor rack and all went smooth as silk. Only took about 15 min to get the carbs to hang proper. With the 'super clean' carburetors, I was able to do a full ColorTune on the bike. All 4 are running perfect! I also did a TBS and damn, the bikes running so nice!

I took her for a shakedown up highway 9, and had to stop and fix a fuel leak. But other than that all was sweet B) Good thing I had the foresight to pack a hand full of zip ties :) Everything ran smooth on the way home. I did pull the front brakes apart today and toss the front pads into the ultrasonic. I also hit the rotors with brake cleaner since I noticed a thin film of oil on the front rotors. That had to come from the brake pads soaking up the leaking brake fluid over the 5 years that the bike sat. They came out all sparkle and clean, we'll see how well they work tomorrow. I think I've Finlay settled on a set of pressures for the tires, 38F/44R. The manual calls for something on the order of 28F/30R even tho the tires are rated at 44F/50R. Doesn't seem right now does it?

I guess that's about it for now. I can feel a bread run to Pescadero tomorrow B)

That's very cool.

When the UPS driver shows up with a box, that will be the bings off my Norton. Oh, wait, that won't help. They suck even when their clean.

Thanks for taking us along on this restore. Just very damn cool.

Cool job there Silent...you gonna have a videographer follow you around so we can HEAR how that thing sounds and moves on the roads?

That would be WAY cool. :clapping:

Great job on the restore! :yahoo:

:clapping: One little project at a time and the XS continues to improve. :clapping:

It looks like I picked the proper home for the "old girl".

You'll have to take the old girl for a spin next time you see her Mike B)

I guess this would be a good time to post up an update.

I'm still working on addressing some of the minor problems with the XS. One of which is the wander I've been getting while ridding at moderate speeds. The bike tends to sway or oscillate as I'm riding it. I think I've finally got that one nailed down tho B) I repacked the steering head, and the wander was greatly improved! I've also been playing with the tire pressures looking for stability, and I think I'm in the right ball park now. While I was in there doing the steering head bearings, I added dielectric grease to all of the connectors I could find B)

Mike had mentioned to me that the valve cover gasket was leaking, so I decided to tackle that issue next. Since I was taking the valve cover off, I might as well check the valves while I'm in there. It turns out that 6 valves out of 8, (3 intake, 3 exhaust) were running just out of spec. The easiest way to change that many valve shims is to just pull the cams. It seemed like a daunting job at the time, but in retrospect, it wasn't hard at all B) The hardest part was having to ride down to Aptos to do a valve shim exchange with one of the XS'ers down there.

With the new shims in and everything in spec, I buttoned her back up and flipped the tank around. I broke out the carb stick and did a TBS and yet another Color-tune.

I spent an hour or so tweaking on the front fender and getting that straight again. It was hitting on the tKat brace, and sitting off center. It's amazing what you can do with a hammer and dolly if you're careful. Then I went to the back of the bike. I flipped the mount for the blinkers, and installed a new license plate frame that I made custom for the XS. I still need to paint fill the text, but you get the idea.

DSC_4506.jpg

While I had the triple tree broken down, I took the steering stem bolt to work and did a bit of modification to it. I drilled and tapped it for a RAM ball and mount B) Once my cradle and power cord come in, I'll be installing my old 2610 onto the XS so I know exactly how fast I'm going, and where to turn for those tight squiggly lines!

DSC_4507.jpg

Currently I'm running her as a naked bike. Its a lot easier to get in and out of my yard without the bags and Vetter fairing on. That , and if I want a full fairing, I could just ride the FJR instead. So I'm going to go the Café route for a fairing. It will go well with the Standard tank and seat that I've got coming. The XS just doesn't have enough range for me with the Special tank on it. I've got a lot of parts in route at the moment, and the looks of the old girl will change a fair bit over the coming weeks. I will keep all the old parts so things can go back to bone stock later if I so desire. But for now, she's mobile as a naked B)

I guess that's enough of an update for now, I hope you've enjoyed the trip so far :drinks:
