Bartonville Police are trying a different approach to get people to stop speeding.

Bartonville residents are now allowed to help police catch speeders.
Police Chief Brian Fengel says the number one complaint he receives is about speeding in residential areas.
So the police department now has a radar gun that community members can check out for up to seven days.
Bartonville Police Chief Brian Fengel says, "We looked at a bunch of different ways to maybe try to slow people down, since there's so many different locations and police can't be everywhere all the time. We thought we'll see if the citizens would be interested in monitoring it, which they're doing already but documenting it in a report for us."
Residents can shoot the radar gun in their neighborhoods to report speeders.
Fengel says once the report is made, he'll send the alleged speeder a warning letter asking them to slow down.
