I'm seriously looking at a 2008. Any issues to be aware of on this model year. What were the recalls that needed to be done?

I have a 08 and no issue so far with 30K on it. Oh I did have to change the oil every now and then. I think there was 2 recalls. A> Wiring mod B>Ignition Switch. I am sure others we be fast to comment. BTW make sure you are wear Kevlar. You will under the statement soon enough :)

Having owned an '05 and an '08, I would take the '08 over the '05. My '05 was a cooker in the summer,and therefore unpleasant to ride even with all the heat fixes installed. With the harness recall or the harnesses sold on this forum, "flaming electrical contraptions" is nothing more than the rantings of a jealous Gen I owner. Seriously, in my opinion, I would view the refinements that Yamaha has done with the Gen IIs as real improvements.

The bike has some farkles and pretty low mileage. Can you throw out some ideas of a fair price......considering the new year fjr is coming out soon.

I'm a month and 6k miles into riding my 08, and the biggest problem with it is it sucks down dollars. There's too healthy an aftermarket for goodies for these bikes, and this forum's Classifieds section and the super helpful regional riders groups are toxic to the pocketbook.

The second biggest problem is that it's a great looking bike, and while it's no Ducati, it always gets comments. Heck, my sister-in-law can't stop calling it a "sexy black beast." And that's with a sheepskin seat cover and a car tire, people still think it's pretty. And really, who wants to deal with their sister-in-law thinking your ride is sexy?!? That's just wrong.

Price? I've seen lots of 08s in the 8k-9k range. I got a better deal than that, but my bike had "high mileage" at 54k when I bought it.

coming up on 79K on my '08 (which is VASTLY superior to the '04 I owned) :glare: and no problems at all. It's just about broken in now! Smooth as butter and dependable as a Honda :p

 
My '08 was pretty much mint, but all stock, with 7,000 miles....bought for $8,600 off of Craigslist.

 
If it has really low miles, it might need a clutch soak depending if the orig owner figured out the shifting problem wasn't normal, if it had the shifting problem.

 
My 08 had 28k on the odo when I bought it. I paid $7k and spent another 400 for travel and such picking it up. It was money well spent!

But that wasn't the end of it, gear, farkles, etc...

So MamaYama improved heat managment on the 06 and up. And they upped the alternator output by 100 watts. Those are the ONLY improvements they made on the Gen II. How the feck does that translate into "VASTLY superior"?

Seriously, all Gen I vs. Gen II kidding aside, "VASTLY superior"? Sorry, but that dog don't hunt.

LOL you need to check your data on the Gen I vs Gen II thingy..longer wheelbase, more relaxed RPM at speed, etc etc. How do you like your Gen II compared to your Gen I? Do you find them the same, or do you have a preference? Inquiring minds want to know. ;)

I agree with those two, but I think there is a 3rd as well. They worked on the airflow management to get rid of the low pressure pocket behind the windshield at highway speed, so there is less buffeting on the gen2 bikes. But agree with your main point - it's mostly detail changes, and the bikes are more alike than different.

 
The only problem with buying an 08 is that the most hyperbolic negative responses will be made by a few Gen 1 owners that have redefined the definition of the word hyperbole...I call it hyper- hyperbole. :assassin: :p

If the recalls are done, then you are looking at a very desirable bike. Personally the 08 black is my favourite. Don't listen to any of the jealous Gen1 naysayers.

The going rate for an unfarkled low mileage one that is not scratched up should be around $8000.
