Any ideas why my ignition switch works intermittently?

A week ago on a ride to Crater Lake two-up I noticed after stopping for breakfast my ignition switch did not start the bike. I turned the key to off then on and all cycled correctly.

Then yesterday I went for a ride with a buddy. No problems starting the bike and getting gas prior to the ride. However, restarting the bike at home a few minutes later, the same thing happened. But it rode fine after it was recycled and started.

I was planning a ride to Grants Pass today and since all my other vehicles have "issues" I was going to ride the FJR. But for the heck of it, I tried starting it up in the garage. Of ten ignition turns to "ON", 4 did absolutely nothing. So it seems to be getting worse. <_<

I have the Brodie harness installed and the spider connections were checked. Original harness. Third Yamaha ignition switch is in (last was just prior to the recall).

What should I go through for a checklist before I assume it is the ignition or harness? Thanks.

Rider error!

Sounds like it's dirty to me. As in dirt/grime at the bottom of the switch messing with the contacts. Squirt something down your switch to get it cleaned out.

A graphite spray sound right, Skoot? I know some types would gum it up worse. I've got contact cleaner in the garage. Spray a little and cycle a few times?

Sounds like dirty contacts in your switch. Try the contact cleaner before anything else. You could also have one of the contacts shifted out of place internally, seen that on a bike that was stolen and wouldn't start afterwards, picked it up for 1000 bucks and a delicate disassembly and fix and I found out I got me a 05 CBR with 4000mi. Good Luck!

+1, Gunny; definitely rider error, extremely loose and faulty wiring in the humanoid unit holding the key. I would definitely start with the contact cleaner first Shiny, use graphite spray only as the second remedy.

Bustanut joker said he was going to jack off in my FJR's ignition switch when he rides Miss Lucy Liu to Oregon this Wednesday, maybe he'll do you the same favor. His **** is so tiny, goes down the hole easily!

Thanks guys, I'll spray some contact cleaner in the Bustanut hole and see what happens.

Thanks guys, I'll spray some contact cleaner in the Bustanut hole and see what happens. Save some for this coming Saturday, SPU!

I copied his key while in Utah bust. Just give me a holler.

Well here is the data:

Without contact cleaner: 6/10 starts

One spray session: 8/10 starts

Second spray session: 9/10 starts

Third spray session: 20/20 starts

So I'd have to say that stuff is a powerful cleaner. Thank you for the informative help. And it felt good!
