Not sure if this is the right place to post a question on tires. Bump off if it isn’t.

I’ve a 2006 that I usually have even tire ware on the entire tire – edge-to-edge. The last pair of Dunlops – Sportmax RoadSmart 120/70 ZR 17 MC – wore down a bit too fast for my pocketbook.

The Question: With all the new technology out there now, is there a better tire that will give the aggressive rider good traction and still good mileage?

If you're asking an opinion, then this is the place. Since tires are a personal issue and affected by riding style, location, and weather, it gets talked about a lot. NEPRT is the perfect place for it.

BTW: IMO Dunflops are the worst choice.

Mostly on the slab, but Michelin PR2's are my tire of choice with consistent 14k mi from a rear and 24k mi from a front

the newest technology are Michelin PR3's which I have no personal knowledge, but some are in the process of trying them out

I've been running the PR2's with good results. Good all around tire and nice mileage. I'm interested to see how the PR3's perform.

Thanks all for this info and the pictures. But highway miles - ridding on the middle of the tire - is not my only issue. Yes, the mileage is great to hear about. But what about the "stickiness" of the sidewall? Obviously I want it all - mileage and stick-to-the-road when canyon-carving.

Does that change your recommendation?

I got 18k out of the last set of Pirelli Angel ST tires. I liked em so much I put another set on 2 weeks ago. I'm hoping my new fork brace will keep the front from cupping like the last one did. Other than the cupping, I have no complaints.

Hey Lanny, you saw what I am running. if sticky is what you are after you can't go wrong wit the Michelin Pilot Exalto. That's a 35000+ mile set up that will keep you smiling in more ways than one. Just check out what my buddy Brian did with his last summer chasing Fairliner at WFO...

Also check out his tires after the "WFO Testing". The Bridgestone BattleAx front bubblegum sport bike tire is toast at just under 2000 miles, but the rear...

NO. I think the PR2 is a great comprimise on grip Vs mileage. There are better sticky tires, but they won't last very long at all.
You ride sporty and will tear up soft tires. The PR2's are closer to the Dunlop Road Smarts, a little harder, so grip woul dbe a tad less, but mileage is great. Not sure there is any othe rtire that comes close here. Also RS's wear real goofy as you'll see doing a search on this.

Many of the SD folks run PR2's PM them. Or at the Tech day, talk to those that have them. ;)

PR2's are "dual compound"...softer and sticker on the edges...harder and longer mileage in the middle

and wonderful rain tires which is important to me in the wet deep South

best of all worlds and still highly recommended...I will not run anything else...not even a Car Tire (CT)

the 2, mutually-exclusive goals for tires. long life, and stickiness. each is a compromise on the imaginary graph. grip along one axis and longevity along the other. you have to pick the point where the 2 meet based on what you can live with. if you want a really sticky tire for the FJR, then you live with swapping them out every 2k to 5k miles.

As for sticky sidewalls, I try not to ride on my sidewalls, so can't say there's any grip up past the treaded area. ;)

After reading the report on the "Darksider" all I can say is holly s*^t! While Richard is relatively fast (and very crazy) to even imagine that a car tire can perform that welll... HS!!!

But, with that said... I'll stick to the overpriced bike tires. If for no other reason than my own selfconfidence - or lack there of.

What pressures are you running for solo riding, Mike?

Thanks,

Matt

I stick pretty close to the 39/42 spec. A pound or two more on occasion.

Wow. I got 16K out of the PR2s, but this set of Angels I have on now is almost done at 8K miles. Of course, I ran the Angels down in Shady Valley, TN on the Snake and through the mountains of NC. They stuck really well, but just didn't get the miles I was hoping for.

Got a set of Storm Ultra IIs on order now. My guess is I'll be back to PR2s or PR3s after that.
