I wasn't sure this topic should be posted under the "Other bike" or "non-bike related categories" :D ... but anyway!

I'm looking around for a small 400c scooter to carry behind my RV when we head out on RV road trips. I'm narrowed my choice down to just two models, and prefer to buy a used one:

Yamaha Majesty 400, or Suzuki Bergman 400.

Has anyone had any positive or negative experiences with either (or both) of these? Anyone know someone selling one?

Thanks!

I will admit it; I took my friends Bergman 650 for a few rides in San Diego.

It was a 2005 model I think. Pretty nice for a commuter.

Plenty of storage.

With gas in the $4-5 range I think people in the US might start embracing the idea of scooters alot more.

After living in Europe for a year (seeing it first hand everyday) it is so much easier to get around

One thing that will never happen here though (in the majority of areas).

(Two dudes commuting on a scooter) sorry Teerex :)

A friend of mine bought a Burgman 400 and I drove it 2 hrs to bring it home. It was great fun. Had a decent amount of acceleration, was easy to lean in curves and didn't drag anything despite some tight curves. It even kept up with the traffic on the interstate without much trouble. Had decent wind protection and storage. My only problem was always looking for the clutch. Nice little runabout.

I am seriously considering getting a 50-100cc scooter to go back & forth to work on & it can sit in my driveway w/ a cover on it. It is less than 10 miles across town to get to work & not over a 35 mph speed limit gets passed through. I have a small 4 cylinder car & gas is making a big dent on me. I cannot imagine how it is for the large SUV/truck owning folks.

I am really not into commuting on my bike because...

#1, no garage... the bike lives in a shed in the backyard. It's a PIA to take in and out thru tiny gate, put saddlebags on from in the house, gear up, etc.

#2, I already have 51,000 miles on my FJR. If I'm going to have high mileage on my bike... I at least want those miles to have smiles attached to them.

Good luck w/ your decision of which to buy. Something that I'll have in mind if & when I decide to look for one... under a certain amount of cc's don't need to be registered or insured.

I'd look into some of the scooters that offer some 'variety' from the ordinary/look-alike models: the Yamaha Morphous, Honda Big Ruckus, or Italjet Dragster -- are three that readily come-to-mind.

Have fun, I'll bet they're great, but don't expect me to wave at you on it as we pass!

LOL....BUT...scooter drivers need to have some better etiquette.

i was taking this nice quiet ride thru this buisness park, speed limit 35.

so i complied. this scooter went flying by me and as he did he was flipping me

off. at first i was pissed and wanted to kick em off the toy he was riding.

but then i found it amusing. and realized he probably had it gunned.

once we hit bangeter (one of our larger road ways in utah) i hopped up

the ponies and left him behind.

<_< still he must have had a bad morning or somthing

I'm actually looking at buying one for my wife to commute to and from school on. Looking for one with ABS. Are Hondas and the 650 Burgman Exec the only ones that have ABS and decent storage?

Last spring I bought a Burgman 400 for my wife. She liked it just fine, especially how easy it was to operate and comfortable it was. The underseat storage was a big benefit to her as well. She did comment that it didn't feel very stable at highway speeds.

I rode it a few times and found the handling to be lacking. It was indeed a little rubbery at highway speeds and I thought the 400 single was a little wimpy.

Anyway, she crashed it last fall. I didn't mourn the loss.

This spring I bought a Honda Silverwing (600cc twin cylinder). It is about the same size and weight ats the Burgman 400 but with a more refined ride and much improved stability. The 600 has 50 HP whereas the 400 had about 35 I think. Its a noticeable improvement. She's been very happy with it. FWIW I took it up to and indicated 90mph (closed course, private road, etc) and it felt very solid. There was more speed to be had it I wanted to push it).

Even though it is close to 500 pounds it feels very light and manuverable.

Looking around for my youngest, found this on the net, don't know anything about them, just looked interesting
250cc Scooter
That link says it's a Ronco???? Does that mean you get rotisserie or jerky maker with it every purchase? Or, do they limit it to the "inside the egg, egg scrambler"?

No, actually I was hoping for a capicheno machine, and the kid has to be shiftless.

I bought the 2007 standard edition Suzuki Burgman 650 last year. I have put about 6000 miles on it in that year. I would not part with it for anything. It handles extremely well, gets 52mpg, holds three of those plastic grocery bags under the seat, easy to maneuver and park, and its fast. Did I mention its fast?

I just recently bought my ’08 FJR to be used mostly for riding distance, but I’ve ridden my scooter to California to see some friends. Total distance each way was 295 miles going the southern route through Palm Springs. It cruised along at 80-90 mph although the wind was so strong riding through Palm Springs it wanted to move me around a bit. The speedo is off, but according to my GPS I’ve had it up to 118mph and I still had more to go. And I weigh close to 270 lbs. Put a smaller person on it and it’ll move along a bit faster I’m sure.

Don’t under estimate scooters. My little 650 will smoke any basic cruiser style V-Twin out there, except for the M109R. It rides really smooth too. I offered to race a guy driving a new Mustang GT a 1/8 mile and he said the embarrassment of being whipped by a scooter would be too much to bear.

Of course you have the stigma attached to riding a scooter. When the Burgman is coming towards you it looks like a sport-bike. I’ve had people start to do the “Biker Wave” only to pull in their hand really quick when they realize they were waving at a guy on a scooter. *******!

If you want a great mode of transportation to run errands around town, get a scooter. If all you’ll ever use your scooter for is running around town, a 400cc will suit your needs perfectly. If you think you’ll ever get out on a highway, get the 650. They are not cheap, but worth every penny. I put an after-market Clearview windshield and the OEM rack on back of mine. It offers better wind protection than my FJR and your legs are completely protected from wind & rain. Tons of storage. Yes, it’s an automatic, but you can choose to shift if you’d like. Although there is no clutch.

My opinion, Suzuki makes the best scooter right now. Don’t let anyone intimidate you into thinking there is anything wrong about owning a scooter. There are a lot of people that have given up just about every type of motorcycle out there for a Suzuki Burgman. Many people ride 2-up across country on a 650. Have you seen any of jdog109socal’s videos where a guy rides with his group on a Burgman 650 scooter?

My normal mode of transportation is a Ford F-250 Diesel. Since I bought my scooter, I have saved twice the $$ each month on what my payment was on my scooter in diesel fuel alone. And I have put less than 2000 miles on my truck in the past year.

Oh boy... I should have known that was coming! :) Now... where the hell did I put that "Born to be Mild" bumper sticker? :D

Big-D - I gave the 650 Bergman some serious thought, mainly because I like the idea a twin rather than that 400cc single cylinder, but the main issue is I need to keep the weight down as much as possible so I don't exceed the RV's carrier weight. I read somewhere the Bergman seat (at least the 400 model), was shaped in such a way that caused the driver to constantly slip forward on the seat, and the Yamaha didn't have that issue. But not sure there's any truth to that or not.

Never fear, died-in-the-wool FJR fans, the scoot isn't a replacement for my FJR. Just need it for short runs around campgrounds and occasionally supply-runs into nearby towns. Major overkill for my other machines.
