I don't hang out much at TDIClub, and their oil threads make this place look like Romper Room. So for the TDi stupid out there like myself, what is a wrong, and right, engine oil for the TDi?
I don't have the specs in front of me and too lazy to look it up at the moment. However, the owners manual has an oil spec /STD listed - important point is to get oil that matches that spec (like API CI-4?, or something along those lines). My recollection is that there were limited options, may have gotten better in recent years.

Prior owner figured any decent oil, changed religiously, would suffice - wrong answer in this case. lesson :meet or exceed mfg recommendations exactly. I don't know if newer gen engines are less touchy

My brother has a 05(?) Jetta diesel wagon and I remember him saying the warranty is void if the recommended oil wasn't used. Priced about the same as synthetic if I remember right.

His wagon is unfortunately dying a so death, excellent shape 30k miles. He ran through a large puddle after Nashville's flood and it shorted out something, he thinks a fuel injector. He started to make the repairs himself and lost interest.....like many of his projects. Anyway its been sitting under a carport since 2010.

He's got a wrecked ST in the same shape, he's got it stripped down and new parts waiting to go on. At least the bike is the garage but has about an inch of dust on it.

Oh yeah, he also has a 1970 MG Eldorado in boxes, fresh paint and powered coated frame, also collecting dust.

Don't understand it.

New jettas get all the services thrown in for the first 3 years36k miles but on tdi forum many use the rotella t

Also good point about how quiet the newer ones are on he freeway, mine just seems to float along at 65 wanting to go 70 or more !

Oh and vw diesels don't need urea like merc and BMW.

One oddity about the vw's is they have some sort of "recycle/decoke" cycle that makes many think their car is broken as this " fan" noise runs on after turning the engine off
