Any VW TDI owners here?

I actually kind of like them, especially with modified suspension and aftermarket wheels. Can you actually opt for no flower vase??? I do not like the new ones though because it's too far a departure from the design of what they should look like. One of the reasons I insisted on a Cooper instead of the other models is they also vary too much from the classic design. I also happen to really like that dark charcoal color that the VW's came in some years ago. However, yea, I'm pretty certain a Miata will be my next car.

Where does the guy in the Miata fit in?
Uhhhhh You really don't want to know unless you've had at least 6 Barbie dolls in your life. On the bright side, Major Chick Magnet and they're always going to ask if its for sale! JSNS
My G.I. Joes were always bangin' my cousin's Barbies....does that count?
I actually kinda like Miatas....
Actually, I like it too. I was just kidding. Too early in the morning?! :))

I owned a TDI Golf and then a gasser GTI. Life is too short to be messing with diesel fuel in a passenger car AND I agree with THE919 on the exaggerated MPG claims. I would get a Japanese gasser for an economy car if'n it were my money.
The beauty of the diesel is that it has so much power and economy potential. With some easy electronic tuning they can really turn up the wick on the diesel. Just as with a good motorcycle aftermarket suspension and brake upgrades completely transform the handling and driving experience. Then a tire and wheel change... With a diesel there is lots of power potential that is easily accessible.

Nah, I've never owned a Beetle, Mini or a Miata.....yet!

That's what I'm talkin' about! After reading some of the 'performance threads', hell, you can gain a bunch of torque and HP from just adding an aftermarket chip. If that ain't enough, go up 1 or 2 sizes on the injectors...which can be a little pricey depending what year TDI you have. The older ones are cheaper. Get too carried away though and your auto tranny is gonna fail or your clutch will get fried. It's always something...

There has to be a weak point somewhere. Once you start increasing performance you start decreasing reliability. The trick is to find a happy medium. I have been researching mods for my Duramax that will improve its economy and power without polluting the environment or compromising reliability. The last thing I want to do is blow black smoke everywhere on the way to blowing up my Allison transmission.

The wife and I looked very hard at a BMW 335D a couple of years ago. That diesel was so quiet and smooth you almost could not tell it was a diesel. Fantastic power and fantastic fuel economy. Horrible price tag.

This is sooooo true! Half my Squadron got sent to Italy for 6 months one time. All the guys over there were putting aviation gas in these little teeny tiny cars and they where running like a bat out of hell until they weren't anymore. We all helped them tear the engines apart to see what the problem was. We found out that all the valves had burned away and they had nothing but stems left! Good Times!!! :))

We had a 2004 Jeta TDI. It ran perfectly and got really good mileage,40MPG was pretty common. The diesel had plenty of power here in the altitude of Colorado. I kept the fuel & oil/ filter changed often and had no problems. I could spin the front wheels on it with just the throttle, my wife hated that!!

That's easy to do...Get a PowerStroke 6.7.

Ducking and running for cover.....

You think you're funny, but you're not...

Just kidding! Good shot!

Have you driven one? I have and it is the real deal, a very impressive motor. I also pulled my gooseneck loaded with logs behind one and he walked off and left me. The new Ford looks like a Tonka Toy inside and out but it works very well. I am a GMC guy but I have driven the others and I cannot say anything bad about the Cummins or the 6.7 Ford. I can talk bad about the Ford 6.0 and the 6.4. I have nothing but good to say about the older Ford 7.3.

My Duramax is no joke either when it comes to making things move, it has been very solid and the Allison Transmission is awesome. I would like to improve the fuel economy and since the 100,000 mile warranty is about out I am going to make some minor changes.

I'm on the verge of getting one, but holy Hell they are expensive. They've got serious balls though. I would think the changes you can make to a PowerStroke would be the same as a Duramax. Stuff like DPF Delete kits and map chips.

Due to EPA restrictions, those motors are more restricted than they should be. Diesels are amazing and have come a very long way in the last 15 years.

Hell, the little TDI Diesel this thread is about is a cool little motor. Doesn't sound like a diesel at all, gets great mileage and has hella potential.

One of the guys I work with is running 6.7.. We've at times hauled the same loads, and that fuker straight out jimmykicks the duramax off the road.

I hate running with the one ton, but being low man on the scrotum pole, I can't always get the big boy trucks.

Far as Cummins? 15 plus years being escorted over the road with them... I have nothing but good words for 'em

Not sure if it's still being done, but a few years back there was a company manufacturing propane injection systems for Diesels. Purported to increase mileage and power.

I own a 2011 Jetta TDI sportwagon, love it - I agree mileage is in teh 40's on a run and mid 30's around town.

I actually really like the dsg gearbox, its super smooth. I have 21k on it and like most cars got a few rattles starting to develop, has a sport mode which remaps the engine/gearbox and that works well for highway merging etc

One thing btw on the towing side, the standard hitch is really really low - i actually cant fit one and get my car out of garage else it grounds at the bottom of the drive - Some on the tdiforum suggest a "european" version but they mean cutting the rear bumper so im not going there.

We have a 2003 Jetta TDI Sportwagen (auto) as well - 150K mi. Due to prior owner using the wrong engine oil, the engine had an expensive rebuild ($10K) around 90K mi (just before we got it). Some TDI models (other mfgs as well) more senstitive to oil specs than others. Something to check on a used car.

50 mpg achieved numerous times on fwy runs from SoCal to LV. in town, spouse unconcerned about efficient driving gets mid-to-upper 30mpg. The newer Jettas are much larger than the earlier generation, hence lower MPG (and power). For freeway trips the newer, larger Jettas are much quieter and comfortable. For my own personal driving, I wouldn't get the older model Jettas except as a utility, extra car. I'd give up the fuel efficiency for the comfort of the newer models. If you are new to diesel, be aware of those models that require an additive (urea - not that big of a deal, more of a nusiance to have to deal with fuel and urea).

I love my 528i wagon, and would love to upgrade to a newer diesel 5 series wagon, if such existed in the states (I keep hoping). I'm at under 110K miles, so I have plenty of years left on the 528iT. If no BMW, I'll seriously consider a VW or Audi TDI wagon. My mom has put 700+K miles on her MB diesel and still gowing fine. Dad has the '09 Jetta sportwagen TDI. Other diesels the family has had have all reach 100-200K mi (other than a 70s Olds diesel (gas conversion) POS).

I don't hang out much at TDIClub, and their oil threads make this place look like Romper Room. So for the TDi stupid out there like myself, what is a wrong, and right, engine oil for the TDi?

Oh man, without turning this into an oil thread... My neighbor bought a used Jetta with a gas burner. They had issues almost from day one. The dealership told them that the car required synthetic oil. They described the engine on conventional oil as having "A cholesterol problem". They said that the oil passages were choked off. They recommended Castrol synthetic.

My wife drives a BMW 328i. There is a sticker under the hood that says you have to use Castrol Syntec. The oil filler cap is embossed with "BMW recommends Castrol". I don't have an opinion on this, and I am NOT going to argue it. I am only reporting, not endorsing.

Well, I can get my wife to get rid of her 5 speed 2003 Jetta TDI. Until I find another car that hits 50MPG and doesn't look like a Prius then she won't give it up. Believe me I've tried on many times to buy her a new car and it's loosing argument, I rarely drive it anyway so, .........If momma ain't happy.......

It consistantly gets 42MPG around town and the best freeway runs are from Tahoe back to the Bay Area where we get 52MPG. It has almost 200,000 miles on it and still runs like it's brand new.

Interior still looks good and all electrical works fine. We've only had to replace a $30 relay under the hood, a water pump and injection pump in 200,000 miles. They're wear items so it's been a really dependable car. No electrical gremlins anywhere. ( as he knocks on wood ).

Alway ran synthetic in it.
