Anyone with an FJR less than 5 yrs old had any major service done?

The reason I'm asking is that I just got my extended warranty notice. It's going to cost $1300 Can. for an extra 4 years coverage. I know these bikes are fairly bulletproof, so my money might be better spent on farkling. I could even have 1 major service and still only break even (as long as it's less than $1300). I just need to know how common major problems are, when the bike is only 5 years old. My useage is approx 10,000 miles(16,000 km) per year.

Paging Mr. Carver, Mr. Don Carver, please pick up the nearest, white courtesy phone.

haven't noticed any posts about using the extended warranty - anyone?
Hey Mike, I've used the extended warranty on my 650 Cruiser but not on any of my FJRs. I know you did not ask that but I feel like typing.

Sure is nice out these days.

Need to get in a ride soon.

Just had all the seals replaced in my final drive due to a leak. Would have cost me about $150 without YES. :)

I think you would be wasting your money on the extended warranty, these bikes are pretty bulletproof, take the chance, spend the money on farkles.

I dunno...for $389 from D&H I think it might be worthwhile but then again I bought mine used and it was included. I can tell you it sure made it easier to buy knowing I still had warranty coverage for 3+ more years. If you were going to sell your bike I would think it would be a big plus to a potential buyer.

It varies upon personal circumstance I think.

$389US for a Gen I bike Y.E.S. that has a percentage that are tickers? No question in my mind....get it!

$389US for a Gen II bike Y.E.S. that aren't tickers? Yeah....maybe.....might help on resale value....think about it.

$xxx for a any bike with third party insurance? No way. Tell dealer to get stuffed....or move from Florida.

$1300 Canadian for Gen II bike Canadian equivalent to Y.E.S.? That's a bit tougher. Personally I'd do if it was an '05 or earlier and maybe for an '06 or later since I'm gonna want to put 30,000+ km per year.

I once bought an extended warranty (100,000 miles - $900) for a new Toyota 4-Runner. It was wasted. I owned two more and piled up 200,000 on them, no warranty, no repairs. I just bought my 4th Toyota truck. Extended warranty? Nope. Not needed.

I get the feeling its about the same with the FJRs, though $389 U.S. is pretty cheap insurance. I just got my '03 FJR out of the shop after a complete round of maintenance at 30,500 miles. New plugs, air filter, fresh fluids in brakes, clutch, final drive, coolant, fork oil changed and seals, TBS, install new stator cover, inspect, lube and torque steering head bearings, swing arm and shock linkages inspected, cleaned, lubed and torqued, brake pads checked (he said 80 percent(!) left in front, 70 percent in rear and these are factory), cam chain tensioner set, etc. etc. (Valves were checked earlier.) About $680. Was it all needed? No, unless I plan to keep the bike for several more years, which I do. The tech indicated there were no major or even minor problems with the machine...at all. It is holding up beautifully and I now expect several more years of trouble-free ownership. If I could get Y.E.S. for $389, I might consider it; for $1,300C/4 years? Not me. Bank or invest the dough and draw interest if you fear a breakdown. Or spend it and pay as you go.

Wish my g/f's 2004 4Runner had that extended warranty. At 90,000 miles a seal in the transfer case has decided to let go. Approximately $50 in parts, but $1500 in labor to repair (by a dealer). Apparently both driveshafts have to be removed and is quite an involved job. Not real happy with Toyota quality right now.

Oh, and for an on topic response.......Iggy nailed it. Since you can't get the cheap Y.E.S plans being sold over on this side of the demarcation line, and according to my calculations, that Y.E.S. plan is costing you approximately $1145 U.S., there is no way I would pay that. Too pricey. Take yer chances.

I mean, how many here who say "buy it" would actually buy it if you had to pay those prices?

Moosehead, I didn't get the pricey Cdn Warranty for my Cdn 04.

I don't put on the mileage that you do because of my work (I try to), but have had no problems with it.

It is a gamble either way but if you look after it and give it maintenance and TLC, it should be fine if you ask me.

Your call.

If ya have the dough to spend, shove it in a high return cd or something. That amount will cover or put a huge dent in even a major job-and you're unlikely to need it on an 06, which has pretty much been rendered tic proof, the only real fear Gen I owners faced, and a small percentage of them to boot. Gen II bikes should be pretty much bulletproof, if their ancestors history has any bearing on it.

would the y.e.s. warranty cover abs brake issues? i ask, as that was a problem with many of the fj's with abs, and was really, really expensive to fix.

Hello? Anyone there? 06A, 24k, head removed due to low compression on cylinders 3 & 4. Determined cause? Carbon between valve seat and valve. Unusual? Maybe. But without the warranty... big $$ that I don't have right now. Me thinks even at $1500 the warranty would have paid for itself.. however, in this case I just scooted in under the 12 month time mark, by about 10 days. The cost of labor is so high these days.. Unless you can afford the out of pocket expense should something even relatively minor go wrong, or can do all your own work ala Radman, buy it dude. Peace of mind. Resale. It all comes down to how rich you are.

Edit addendum. If you only ride 5k a year, forget it. If you put on 20k+ a year, by 5 years you're at 100k.. and something most likely will fail by then.

Thanks everyone for all the responses. I've decided to take my chances. I don't normally buy extended warranties on anything else and this bike seems very durable. Now if it would just stop snowing and get warmer..................

Do you really think you'll have over $1000 in repairs?

If you were talking the $350 plan from D&H (where I just bought my '07) I might say its worth it. I never-ever buy an extended warranty on anything and with the exception of my current clutch issue rarely take anything in for service/repairs. I figure with all the $$ I save on b.s. extended plans I can afford a repair or two.

It used to be years ago that everything came with 4 yr warranty from electronics to cars then some butt kissing pencil pusher comes up with this rip off gimmick lack of customer care/service to make even more $$ for nothing.

Give me 4 yrs standard then let me choose!

K I'm done now.

Would be interested in knowing if it leaks again soon....

I have used it for that 2 times and it still leaks, going to a different dealer this time....

transmission rebuilt!!!!! under warrantee!!!! popping out of gear in second!!!

snick snick now except for the shift to second that still clunks unless I pre load, for that shift...

but that was about 2+ grand that I paid 389.00 plus tax to d&h in GA

I think you are buying peace of mind as much as anything when you get a warranty. I have had 6 years roadside assistance with my last bike, never saw a dime of it back, but I kind of liked knowing I had it. Extended warranties are revenue generators for mfgr's almost invariably. That's why they never pass up the chance to sell you one, whether it's a TV set, appliance or whatever. When I bought my Sharp Aquos HD TV, it was funny how the sales people sort of paint themselves into a corner. To sell it, they stress the high quality and reliability. Then just as your about to pay they carefully try to suggest it may also be a real piece of s--t, and these things do fail, etc. That said, I guess I have to now confess, even though I almost never buy them, I did let them sell me Y.E.S. It was in large part because they made such a good deal with my trade in etc. It was almost like free. After researching my trade value ('00 BMW R1200C) I had a price in mind I thought was fair. They came with a good number, it already had Y.E.S. built in. I instantly bacame very lightheaded and whipped out my (equity line acct) check book. I don't remember much after that.

I have an 05 FJR @ 16K miles and my forks seals are leaking. Taking it in next week but I do have the extended coverage. It's also on recall for the TPS.
